Wingfoil World Cup and Board Sports in Leucate-La Franqui
The Mondial du Vent is the international reference event for board sports, organized every year in April in Leucate-La Franqui in the Aude region. Created in 1998, it hosts the only French stage of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup and the IFCA windsurfing world championships. For a week, the best international riders compete on the Mediterranean waters, while the "Village de la Glisse" (Board Sports Village) offers initiations, exhibitions, and activities for an audience of 200,000 spectators.
Created in 1998, the Mondial du Vent has established itself as the leading board sports event in France and one of the most important globally. Organized annually in April on the beach of La Franqui, in Leucate, it benefits from exceptional windy conditions thanks to the Tramontane, which regularly blows at over 30 knots along this coastline. The event hosts the only French stage of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup, the IFCA Windsurfing World Championships, and the SFT Parawing World Cup, attracting the international elite of riders.
The competitions take place over several days with events in wingfoil (freestyle, slalom, waves), windsurfing (freestyle), kitesurfing, and new disciplines like pumpfoil and efoil. The world's best riders—men and women—compete in often spectacular conditions, with strong winds and choppy seas providing an exceptional spectacle for the thousands of spectators gathered on the beach. In 2025, Spain's Nia Suardiaz and Italy's Francesco Cappuzzo won the freefly-slalom World Cup.
On land, the Village de la Glisse brings together exhibitors, board sports schools, and activities. Visitors can try wingfoiling, kitesurfing, or stand-up paddleboarding thanks to mini-passes (8 euros) or sport passes (10 euros). Demonstrations, screenings, and meet-and-greets with athletes complete the offering. The village is freely accessible and offers food, drinks, and relaxation areas facing the sea, in a friendly and sporty atmosphere.
The Mondial du Vent attracts around 200,000 spectators to La Franqui beach each year and generates considerable economic benefits for the Leucate area and the Aude department. The event is supported by the Occitanie Region, the Department of Aude, and the municipality of Leucate, and benefits from international media coverage. With its 29th edition scheduled for 2026, the Mondial du Vent confirms its status as an unmissable event for all board sports and water sports enthusiasts.
