Pentecost wine and cheese fair, a century-old tradition in the Loir Valley
The Montoire-sur-le-Loir Fair is a traditional trade fair held every year on Pentecost Sunday in this town in the Loir Valley, in Loir-et-Cher. Inheriting a century-old tradition, this wine and cheese fair brings together winemakers, producers, artisans, merchants, and associations on Place Clemenceau and Boulevard des Alliés. The program includes tastings, musical entertainment, country dance demonstrations, and fairground activities that attract visitors from all over the Vendômois region.
For over a century, Montoire-sur-le-Loir has been perpetuating the tradition of its great Pentecost commercial fair. This charming town in the Loir Valley, known for its Saint-Gilles chapel with Romanesque frescoes and its rich architectural heritage, hosts a commercial and festive event every spring that is the pride of its inhabitants and attracts visitors from the entire Vendômois region and beyond.
The fair traditionally highlights the region's wines and cheeses. Winemakers from local appellations—Coteaux du Vendômois, Touraine—offer tastings and direct sales of their vintages. Cheesemongers and dairy producers present the cheese specialties of the Loire region. In addition to wines and cheeses, many local producers and artisans complete the offering: charcuterie, honey, jams, artisanal bread, pottery, and basketry.
The fair is not just about commerce; it's also a true popular festival. The program includes musical entertainment with bands and orchestras, country dance demonstrations, street performances, and fairground activities for children. Local associations have information and entertainment stands, contributing to the social and cultural life of the commune.
Historically located on Place Georges-Clemenceau, the fair has moved in recent years to Boulevard des Alliés, near the footbridge, to offer more space for exhibitors and visitors. Adjacent streets also host stands and entertainment, creating a festive route through Montoire's town center. The proximity to the Loir River and its quays offers a pleasant setting for strolling among the stalls.
The town of Montoire-sur-le-Loir is renowned for its International Festival of World Dances and Music, its Romanesque chapels, and its troglodyte heritage. The Pentecost fair is part of this rich cultural fabric and contributes to the tourist appeal of the town and the Loir Valley.
