The magic of Christmas in the heart of the royal city of Blois
The Blois Christmas Market, integrated into the "Des Lyres d'hiver" festival organized by the City of Blois, transforms the royal city into an enchanting Christmas village every year. From late November to early January, magical illuminations, chalets, an opening parade, street shows, a small train, and producers' and associations' markets liven up the historic city center. The Château square, Louis-XII square, and pedestrian streets host a festive and family-friendly program combining crafts, local gastronomy, light shows, and entertainment for all ages.
Every year, the City of Blois adorns itself in its finest attire to celebrate the end-of-year holidays with the "Des Lyres d'hiver" festival. This festive program, which runs from late November to early January, transforms the historic center of the royal city into a magical Christmas village, combining markets, shows, illuminations, and family entertainment in an exceptional heritage setting dominated by the Royal Château of Blois.
The Christmas illuminations are one of the highlights of Des Lyres d'hiver. From the end of November, the streets, squares, and monuments of Blois are adorned with magical lights: sparkling garlands, light projections on facades, illuminated Christmas trees, and themed decorations create a magical atmosphere that delights strollers. The Château square and Louis-XII square, in the heart of the historic district, become showcases of light where families and tourists gather.
Two commercial highlights punctuate the festive season in Blois. The Associations' Christmas Market, celebrating its 25th edition, takes place on a Sunday in late November and brings together about twenty associations involved in various fields (solidarity, environment, culture) offering original, solidarity-based, and artisanal gifts. The Producers' Christmas Market, organized in partnership with the Chamber of Agriculture and the Bienvenue à la Ferme association, takes place on December 21st and 22nd and showcases local products from Loir-et-Cher and the Loire Valley: cheeses, cured meats, wines, honeys, jams, gingerbread, and Sologne specialties.
The opening parade, a luminous and musical walking show, marks the official start of the festivities. Each year, a performing arts company is invited to animate this parade which crosses the city center from the Château square, leading spectators in a magical procession. Street shows – luminous jugglers, street musicians, storytellers, and acrobats – liven up the pedestrian streets throughout December.
The Christmas train takes young and old on a tour of the illuminated city, starting from Louis-XII square. Creative workshops for children, photo sessions with Santa Claus, and puppet shows complete the family entertainment program. The ephemeral ice rink, when installed, delights skating enthusiasts in the city center.
The Des Lyres d'hiver festival takes advantage of Blois' exceptional architectural heritage to offer a unique setting for the festivities. The Royal Château, the half-timbered houses of the medieval district, the Denis-Papin staircase, and the banks of the Loire form a spectacular backdrop for the illuminations and shows. The heritage dimension of the event makes it much more than just a Christmas market: it is a true staging of the city, a dialogue between history and celebration that delights tens of thousands of visitors each year.
