Independent music festival at the Cascade du Déroc in Aubrac
MordorFest is an independent music festival held every summer in Nasbinals, Lozère, above the Cascade du Déroc on the Aubrac plateau. Created in 2018 on the initiative of Paskoual, it offers two days of concerts under marquees with about twenty European bands exploring rock, metal, electro, rap, noise, and experimental music. Entirely volunteer-run, the festival champions a free programming in an exceptional natural setting in the heart of the Aubrac Regional Natural Park.
Perched on the Aubrac plateau, above the spectacular Cascade du Déroc, MordorFest is a musical UFO that shakes up the codes of rural festivals. Every mid-August, this small village of Nasbinals in Lozère — France's least populated department — transforms into an epicenter of independent music, hosting about twenty bands from all over Europe on two stages under marquees. From rock to metal, noise to electro, rap to experimental music, MordorFest rejects any label and celebrates musical diversity in a spirit of total freedom.
The story of MordorFest began with Paskoual, creator of La Cave de Chadenet, a legendary venue on the Lozère underground scene that hosted over ten years of concerts. To celebrate this decade of live music, the idea of an immersive festival emerged in 2018, in the exceptional setting of the fortified farm of Chambalon, in the heart of the Cévennes. Organized in just two months by a handful of enthusiasts — Dodus, Aurélien, Paul, Delpi, Pierre, Marion, Julie, and many others — this first edition, despite some thunderstorms, was a resounding success. The team then decided to formalize the project by creating the MordorFest association.
In 2019, the first "official" edition was held again at Chambalon on the weekend of August 15th and sold out, exceeding all expectations. After the interruption imposed by the pandemic in 2020, the festival resumed in 2021 with a favorite: a site located above the Cascade du Déroc, owned by Camille, who shared the same values of freedom and creation. This exceptional natural site, 50 meters from the waterfall and one kilometer from the Lac des Salhiens, became the festival's new home.
MordorFest operates without any paid staff. All management relies on the commitment of about twenty active volunteers throughout the year, reinforced by about a hundred volunteers during the festival. This associative structure, governed by the 1901 law, is composed of six founding members from diverse backgrounds, united by the same conviction: to bring music to life freely and authentically. The objective is clear — to offer a platform for independent artists, support young talents from Lozère, and unite a community of enthusiasts of alternative music and cultures.
Beyond the music, MordorFest offers an immersive experience: stands by artisans and creators, record stores, screen printing workshops, art exhibitions, and a producer's market punctuate the weekend. The food focuses on local Lozère products — aligot, truffade, Aubrac specialties — complemented by vegetarian options. The bar serves craft beers, wine, and fruit juices. On-site camping, on flat, grassy ground with hot showers, allows for a full immersion in the adventure, lulled by the cool August nights on the Aubrac.
Since its creation, MordorFest has established itself as a unique summer cultural event, combining contemporary music, social commitment, and environmental respect, in the heart of one of France's most beautiful landscapes.
