The Musiques Volantes festival held a unique place in the musical landscape of Metz and Lorraine. For over two decades, this autumnal festival aimed to introduce the public to unclassifiable music—music that defied usual labels and categories. Between experimental rock, avant-garde electro, alternative hip-hop, and hybrid sound creations, Musiques Volantes carved its own path with remarkable artistic integrity.
The festival had made its home at Les Trinitaires, a former 13th-century convent converted into a concert hall and cultural venue in the heart of Metz. This historic site, with its stone vaults and unique acoustics, offered an intimate setting perfectly suited to the music the festival championed. Les Trinitaires, affiliated with Cité musicale-Metz, was the main venue for concerts, although some editions also extended to other partner venues in the metropolitan area and beyond (Nancy, Luxembourg).
The strength of Musiques Volantes lay in its audacious programming. The festival did not seek mainstream headliners but favored artists who pushed the boundaries of musical creation. Each edition was an opportunity to discover musicians from all continents, unprecedented experimental projects, and performances that blended music, visual arts, and digital technologies.
After several editions acclaimed by the specialized press, the festival bid farewell in November 2018 with its 23rd edition conceived as a celebration and a farewell: « Disparition » (Disappearance). Organized by the association Les Musiques Volantes, the event leaves behind the memory of a pioneer of the emerging scene, who contributed for over twenty years to the cultural dynamism of Metz alongside other metropolitan events.
