The largest river festival in France at the confluence of the Seine and Oise
Every third weekend of June, Conflans-Sainte-Honorine — a town labeled "Capital of River Transport" in the Yvelines — vibrates to the rhythm of the Pardon National de la Batellerie, the largest river festival in France. Born in 1960 from the desire to pay homage to bargemen who died for France, this event combines a commemorative ceremony, religious traditions, and popular festivities in an exceptional setting, at the confluence of the Seine and Oise.
It was Jean David, secretary-general of the town hall and originally from Finistère, who gave the name "Pardon" to this festival, referring to Breton traditions. Accompanied by Mayor Mr. Berrurier, Father Gousset, and several personalities, he spearheaded the creation of this event during a memorable session on a boat at the Nautical Show in Paris. The primary objective of the Pardon is to honor the memory of river transport veterans. Its originality lies in its dual nature, both civil and religious, which has endured for over sixty years.
Conflans-Sainte-Honorine owes its river vocation to its exceptional geographical location at the crossroads of the Seine and Oise. From the 19th century onwards, the town became the main home port for bargemen in France, and the Musée de la Batellerie, housed in the Château du Prieuré, bears witness to this unique history.
The Pardon weekend is structured around several emblematic highlights:
On Saturday, the Flame of Remembrance is rekindled under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and then transported by boat to Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in a solemn river procession. This symbolic gesture connects national memory with that of the bargemen who sacrificed their lives for France.
On Sunday, a mass is celebrated aboard a boat moored on the Seine, followed by the traditional blessing of the boats and the casting of a wreath of flowers into the river in memory of the disappeared. This emotional moment, at the heart of the Pardon tradition, brings together bargemen, families, and visitors in shared remembrance.
Throughout the weekend, the François-Mitterrand promenade and the Seine quays come alive with boat parades, sailing demonstrations, nautical introductions, and commented cruises. Visitors can board barges and discover river life from the inside, while exhibitions and a river book fair complete the cultural program.
The Pardon is also a grand popular festival. An entertainment village is set up along the quays with a producers' market, artisans, food trucks, and dining areas. Street performances, concerts, and activities for children punctuate the days. Historical encampments — such as the Viking encampment offered during the 2025 edition at the Parc du Château de Théméricourt — add an immersive and educational dimension to the event.
The Pardon National de la Batellerie attracts thousands of visitors each year from all over the Île-de-France region and beyond. Supported by the City of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, bargemen associations, and players in the river world, it is an unmissable event for all enthusiasts of river heritage and inland navigation history. Its unique character in France makes it an irreplaceable event in the cultural landscape of the Yvelines.
The 67th edition of the National Pardon of Inland Waterways will take place from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14, 2026 in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. Under the theme « From the River to the Ocean – Heading for Brittany », this edition will highlight Breton culture with a Breton village in the park of Théméricourt castle, dance demonstrations, the Celtic leather-hulled boat Curragh Sant Efflam, and the traditional highlights: rekindling of the Flame of Remembrance, river procession, mass for inland waterway workers, and blessing of the boats.
The National Pardon of Inland Waterways returns for its 67th edition from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14, 2026 in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. This essential event of French river heritage annually gathers boatmen, inland navigation enthusiasts, and visitors along the banks of the Seine, at the confluence of the Oise.
This 67th edition honors Brittany, echoing Conflans' river identity and the link between river tradition and maritime culture. A Breton village will be set up in the park of Théméricourt castle with the association Gward An Aod, offering blacksmithing demonstrations, medieval combat, and historical cooking. Visitors can also discover the Curragh Sant Efflam, a traditional Celtic leather-hulled boat, and participate in rowing trips on the Seine.
As every year, the Pardon is punctuated by emblematic ceremonies:
Throughout the weekend, the banks of the Seine and the François-Mitterrand promenade host a village of river stakeholders (Quai de la République), boat parades, guided cruises departing from pier n°1, a local authors' book fair aboard the Story Boat, activities at the Blaise-Cendrars media library, and shows for all ages. An exhibition « Repères Remarquables » by the collective Dans le Sens de la Barge is also offered.
The evenings of June 12 and 13 will be enlivened by concerts and musical entertainment, particularly in Place Fouillère with a program combining guest artists and DJ sets until midnight.
An educational program « From the River to the Ocean – Heading for Brittany » is offered to children: visit to the exhibition on the history of the « Indian boat » at the Orangerie, storytelling workshops at the Blaise-Cendrars media library, trip to the National Maritime Museum, and Breton-themed Olympiads.
By car: Conflans-Sainte-Honorine is accessible via the A15 motorway (exit 7 Conflans / Herblay) or the A13 then A14. Free parking near the quays, but it is recommended to prioritize public transport due to crowds.
By train: Conflans-Sainte-Honorine station (Transilien line J or L from Paris Saint-Lazare, about 30 minutes). The station is a 10-minute walk from the Seine quays and the heart of the Pardon.
By bus: Several lines of the bus network serve the town center of Conflans.
The Pardon takes place from Friday evening to Sunday evening. Activities on the quays are generally accessible from 10 am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Ceremonies (Flame rekindling, river mass, blessing) follow a precise schedule published each year on the town's website.
Access to the quays, activities, and most shows is free. Some commented cruises may require booking.
