Picherande, the first European gentian village

Perched at an altitude of over 1,100 meters in the Sancy massif, in the Puy-de-Dôme, Picherande is known as the "first European gentian village." The yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea), a tall mountain pasture plant whose roots are harvested by hand by the gentianaires, is an essential part of this mountain region's identity. This is the tradition celebrated every year at the Gentian Festival.

A grand popular festival on August 14th and 15th

For two days in mid-August, the town of Picherande pulses to the rhythm of the festival. The program, centered on the gentian and Sancy traditions, includes:

  • a market featuring local crafts and products, including gentian-based goods and regional specialties;
  • an exhibition on the gentian and the craft of the gentianaire;
  • folk parades and demonstrations led by the La Bourrée du Pavin group and the Banda du Cendre;
  • Miss Gentiane and her court, along with the giant character "Fonsou le gentianaire," iconic figures of the procession;
  • "Meet the Gentianaire" hikes to discover how the plant is harvested in the mountain pastures;
  • free activities for children.

The festival honors local brotherhoods—gentianaires and bakers—in a friendly atmosphere typical of Sancy villages. Admission is free.
