Festival of literature and nature in the Loue Valley at Ornans
The Plumes et Regards festival was born from the idea of creating a dialogue between literature and nature in an exceptional setting: the Loue Valley, in Ornans, in the heart of the Doubs. This region, famous for having inspired the realist painter Gustave Courbet, is also a favorite spot for writers, poets, and naturalists who draw inexhaustible inspiration from the wild beauty of its landscapes.
The heart of the festival consists of encounters with authors of nature literature, nature writing, and contemporary poetry. Writers, poets, and essayists come to share their intimate relationship with nature and landscape through public readings, round tables, and interviews. Some readings take place in the open air, by the Loue river or in gardens, creating total immersion between words and landscape.
The festival offers writing workshops led by authors, inviting participants to write inspired by the valley's landscapes. Guided literary walks take participants along the Loue trails, with reading stops at remarkable viewpoints. These poetic walks allow for a rediscovery of natural heritage through the prism of literature.
Echoing the "Regards" (Views) in its title, the festival includes a nature photography component, with exhibitions by nature photographers who focus their gaze on the fauna, flora, and landscapes of the Doubs. This visual dimension enriches the literary approach, creating a dialogue between words and images, between the pen and the lens.
Plumes et Regards is part of the artistic and cultural tradition of Ornans, the town of Gustave Courbet, who captured the beauty of nature in his realist paintings. The festival perpetuates this heritage by inviting other forms of expression—writing and photography—to celebrate the splendor of the Loue Valley and the richness of its natural heritage.
The Plumes et Regards festival returns in October 2026 in Ornans for a new edition celebrating the dialogue between literature and nature. Author encounters, open-air readings by the Loue river, writing workshops, literary walks on the Courbet trails, and nature photography exhibitions will make up the program for this poetic weekend in the heart of the Loue Valley.
An event for all lovers of words and nature, in the landscapes that inspired Gustave Courbet.
The festival takes place in various locations in Ornans: town center, banks of the Loue, gardens.
Full weekend, with events in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
Free admission for most events. Some workshops require registration.
