Explore science differently with the University of Lyon
The Pop'Sciences Festival is the biennial major event for scientific culture organized by the University of Lyon. Every two years since 2017, this free festival takes over a territory in the Lyon metropolitan area for a weekend of discoveries: workshops, exhibitions, conferences, and guided tours allow the public to meet researchers and understand the world around us. Nearly 5,000 visitors and 190 speakers make each edition a unique moment of knowledge sharing.
Created in 2017 by the University of Lyon, the Pop'Sciences Festival is the biennial event for scientific outreach in the Lyon metropolitan area. Every two years, this free festival, open to all, takes over a neighborhood, town, or emblematic location in the region for a weekend of discovery, exchange, and wonder. Curious minds from 7 to 107 years old are welcome to explore the mysteries of science.
Each edition of the Pop'Sciences Festival offers a rich and varied program: hands-on workshops, interactive exhibitions, researcher conferences, guided tours, and scientific observations. The themes cover a vast spectrum: paleontology, biology, neuroscience, anthropology, astronomy, river pollution, virus transmission, the functioning of the human brain… Science is presented in an accessible, fun, and engaging way.
The 5th edition in May 2025, hosted in Belleville-en-Beaujolais, brought together nearly 5,000 visitors, including 1,000 schoolchildren, with 190 speakers—researchers, PhD students, and science communicators—offering various activities. A success that confirms the public's appetite for science told differently.
The originality of the Pop'Sciences Festival lies in its territorial roots: each edition takes place in a different location within the metropolitan area, creating a unique link between university research and the local inhabitants. Previous editions have taken place in Villeurbanne, the Doua campus, and Belleville-en-Beaujolais in partnership with the Saône-Beaujolais Community of Communes. The festival thus contributes to the rayonnement of scientific culture far beyond the university walls.
