The Procession de la Sanch: Six Centuries of Devotion
Every Good Friday, Perpignan experiences one of its most intense and moving moments: the Procession de la Sanch. This religious tradition, unique in France, dates back to 1416, when the Dominican friar Vincent Ferrier founded the Archconfraternity of the Sanch in the Saint-Jacques church of Perpignan.
Historical Origins
In the 16th century, Dominican friars were tasked with accompanying condemned prisoners to the scaffold, protecting them from popular lynching while ensuring them a religious burial. The procession originated from this tradition of compassion and support for the most vulnerable. The word "Sanch" means "blood" in Catalan, recalling the blood shed by Christ.
The Procession's Course
The procession begins at 3 PM, the hour of Christ's death on the cross, from the Saint-Jacques church in Perpignan. The penitents, dressed in long red and black robes and wearing the caparutxa (pointed hood), carry the "misteris", polychrome wooden sculptures depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ.
The Route
The solemn procession, lasting three hours, follows a route connecting the four historic parishes of Perpignan:
- Saint-Jacques Church: Departure of the procession
- Saint-Jean Cathedral: Main station
- Saint-Mathieu Church
- La Réal Church
The Revival of 1950
While the procession has been maintained for centuries, it experienced a revival in 1950 under the initiative of Josep Deloncle, founder of Casa Pairal. It is thanks to him that the processions, with the parade of the "misteris", resumed their course through the city center of Perpignan.
Intangible Cultural Heritage
In 2023, the Procession de la Sanch was classified as intangible cultural heritage of France, recognizing its exceptional historical, cultural, and spiritual importance. This inscription testifies to the vitality of a tradition that brings together thousands of faithful and curious onlookers in the streets of Perpignan each year.
