Outdoor reggae and roots festival in Lebetain
The Roots Lebet Festival was a reggae and roots music festival held every summer outdoors in the small village of Lebetain, in the Territoire de Belfort. Driven by enthusiasts of Jamaican music and roots culture, this rustic festival brought together reggae lovers from all over the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in a green and relaxed setting, true to the spirit of major reggae festivals.
In the heart of the Territoire de Belfort, the small village of Lebetain has long vibrated to the rhythm of reggae thanks to the Roots Lebet Festival. This outdoor festival, run by volunteers passionate about Jamaican music, offered a roots and reggae interlude every summer in a rustic and friendly setting, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities.
With its marquees set up in the greenery, its dreadlocks swaying in the wind, and its deep bass sounds, the Roots Lebet Festival had all the hallmarks of an authentic reggae festival. The focus was on the musical quality and authenticity of the programmed artists, whether they were local bands or artists from further afield sharing their love for roots music.
Reggae has a long tradition in Franche-Comté and the Territoire de Belfort, a multicultural territory open to influences from around the world. The Roots Lebet Festival embodied this tradition by offering a quality stage in a department more often associated with the rock of the Eurockéennes than with Jamaican rhythms.
The festival was distinguished by its intimate and family-friendly character, in contrast to large gatherings. Its outdoor site allowed festival-goers to settle comfortably on the grass, enjoy the music in a relaxed atmosphere, and share reggae culture in its most authentic spirit.
True to the spirit of the roots movement, the Roots Lebet Festival showcased artists and bands that championed reggae in its purest forms—roots reggae, dub, conscious dancehall, ska, and rocksteady—far from commercial productions. The programming reflected the richness and diversity of Jamaican music and its contemporary heirs.
Even though the festival has not maintained regular activity over the years, it remains a significant memory for the inhabitants of Lebetain and reggae enthusiasts in the Territoire. Its memory testifies to the ability of small rural communities to host major cultural events, defying preconceptions about the cultural vitality of areas far from major cities.
