The Saverne Christmas Market: Intimate Christmas Magic
Nestled at the foot of the Northern Vosges, the town of Saverne offers an enchanting setting for its Christmas festivities. The Christmas Magic, also called Winter Magic, transforms the town center for over a month into a true Alsatian Christmas village, with the majestic Rohan Castle as a backdrop.
A Christmas Village in the Heart of the Town
On General de Gaulle Square, about fifteen wooden chalets host local artisans and merchants. You can find handmade Christmas decorations, wooden toys, scented candles, Alsatian textiles, and many delicacies: bredele (small Alsatian Christmas cakes), gingerbread, hot chestnuts, mulled wine, and flammekueche. The Gourmet Village offers savory and sweet specialties to enjoy on-site in a warm atmosphere.
Ice Rink and Activities
A synthetic ice rink set up on General de Gaulle Square delights children and families. Christmas treasure hunts are organized for the younger ones, while storytelling walks transport young and old into the magical world of Alsatian Christmas legends. The shop windows along Grand'Rue compete in creativity with their festive decorations.
Magical Illuminations
As night falls, Saverne reveals its full magic. Illuminations adorn the half-timbered facades, shop windows, and fir trees with thousands of sparkling lights, from Place Saint-Nicolas to the train station. Grand'Rue, the town's main shopping street, transforms into a luminous corridor that enchants passers-by.
Nativity Scenes
Saverne is also renowned for its Nativity scene exhibitions. The chapel of Haut-Barr Castle and the Church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité in the town center host magnificent handmade nativity scenes, adding a spiritual and heritage dimension to the Christmas festivities.
A Human-Sized Market
The Saverne Christmas Market stands out for its intimate and authentic character. Far from the crowds of the large markets in Strasbourg or Colmar, it offers a more peaceful and family-friendly experience, conducive to strolling and encounters. Its proximity to Strasbourg (25 minutes by direct train) makes it an ideal excursion for those who wish to discover a quieter Alsatian Christmas.
