Theater and music festival in the bars of Thionville and the Fensch Valley
The Scènes au Bar festival is based on a concept that is as simple as it is appealing: to take performing arts out of conventional theaters and place them in the heart of the bars and cafes of Thionville and the Fensch Valley. For over twenty editions, this traveling festival has created improbable and magical encounters between artists and audiences in the intimacy of bar counters, transforming each bar into an ephemeral stage.
The Scènes au Bar program is designed to offer a diversity of artistic forms. The program is equally divided between three disciplines: one-third theater, one-third musical performances, and one-third concerts. This variety allows each bar to host a type of show adapted to its atmosphere and audience, and offers spectators the opportunity to create their own festival itinerary.
What makes Scènes au Bar magical is the absolute proximity between artists and the audience. In the small space of a bar, spectators are just a few centimeters away from actors and musicians, creating a direct and intense connection that doesn't exist in any other festival format. This intimacy transforms each performance into a unique and shared moment, where emotion flows freely between the improvised stage and the seated audience.
Scènes au Bar unfolds across a vast territory, taking over bars in Thionville, but also those in the Fensch Valley: Fameck, Uckange, Hayange, and other towns in northern Moselle. Some editions even include stops in Metz. This traveling nature contributes to the cultural animation of areas that do not always have traditional performance venues and creates connections between different towns.
The festival is supported by the association Polar sur la Ville, a cultural organization committed to promoting local performing arts in the Thionville region and the Fensch Valley. Beyond Scènes au Bar, the association organizes other cultural events throughout the year, contributing to the artistic dynamism of northern Moselle.
The festival spans two weeks, usually in March, allowing for about twenty shows in as many different bars. This extended format allows festival-goers to attend multiple shows without time constraints, and participating bars to each benefit from their dedicated evening. The festive atmosphere that accompanies each performance benefits artists, bar owners, and their customers alike.
