Mulhouse, capital of street arts since 1998
Created in 1998 by the cultural animation service of the City of Mulhouse, the Scènes de Rue festival has become, in nearly three decades, the unmissable event for street arts in the Grand Est region. Every year in July, the city of Bollwerk transforms into a vast urban artistic laboratory where live performance invades public spaces. From Place de la Réunion to Parc Salvator, via Parc Steinbach and Place de la Paix, artists take over the city to offer original and ephemeral creations.
An eclectic and entirely free program
The strength of Scènes de Rue lies in its total freeness and the diversity of its programming. Each edition hosts around 28 companies, several of which are from the Grand Est region, for about thirty shows combining street theatre, contemporary circus, dance, music, visual arts, and roaming performances. The festival is distinguished by its taste for in situ creations, shows designed specifically for a location, which transform residents' perception of their own city. Numerous premieres and original creations punctuate each edition, making Mulhouse a true springboard for street artists.
A festival for everyone, accessible and responsible
Scènes de Rue champions the values of accessibility and inclusion. The “PopUp!” label identifies shows particularly suitable for young audiences, allowing families to plan their visit with confidence. Welcome teams are present at each performance venue, and the festival is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. The event is also committed to an eco-responsible approach, encouraging the use of public transport, bicycles, and park-and-ride facilities via the “Compte Mobilité” app.
The festive soul of Mulhouse in summer
Beyond the shows, Scènes de Rue creates a unique atmosphere in the streets of Mulhouse. Café terraces fill up, families picnic in the parks between performances, and artists mingle with the public in a warm and spontaneous ambiance. The festival has forged a deep connection with the people of Mulhouse, who eagerly await this event as the cultural highlight of their summer. Shows also take place in unexpected locations—school courtyards, covered passages, industrial wastelands—revealing little-known facets of the city and offering everyone the chance to rediscover Mulhouse in a new light.
