International street performance festival in the alleys of Leucate Village
Each year during the Ascension weekend, the village of Leucate is transformed thanks to the Sol y Fiesta festival. Since 2000, this international street arts event has attracted theater companies, street musicians, acrobats, and jugglers from all over Europe. The picturesque alleys of the hilltop village, with their stone facades and shaded squares, become the natural backdrop for ephemeral and surprising performances. The event is organized by the municipality of Leucate with the support of the Occitanie Region.
The Sol y Fiesta program brings together over 300 artists from 27 European companies each year, with three international headliners. Performances begin at 6 PM each evening (Friday and Saturday) and continue until midnight. The streets come alive with parades, roaming brass bands, batucadas, circus acts, fire shows, and concerts that surprise spectators at every turn. The public is invited to participate actively: dance, sing, play music, or join the theater troupes.
Restaurants, bars, and associations in Leucate Village set up their bodegas in the streets, offering tapas, grilled meats, Catalan specialties, and local wines. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, with terraces spilling out onto the squares and alleys. Sol y Fiesta is also a moment of gastronomic discovery for visitors who can savor Mediterranean cuisine while watching the shows from their tables.
One of Sol y Fiesta's strengths is its complete freeness: all performances are free to access, in the tradition of street arts festivals. This accessibility makes the festival a truly popular event, bringing families, young people, and seniors together in a shared festive communion. With its 26th edition in 2025, Sol y Fiesta has established itself as a major event on the Leucate cultural calendar and a model for street festivals in Occitanie.
Sol y Fiesta 2026, 27th edition, on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 in Leucate Village, during Ascension weekend. Free international street performance festival, with wandering acts, batucadas, grand festive parades and two major shows by Compagnie Remue Menage (L'Iliade musicale) and CPPP (L'Odyssee d'Ulysse, au-dela des dieux).
The 27th edition of Sol y Fiesta took place on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16, 2026, Ascension weekend, in the streets of Leucate Village. As every year, the international street performance festival took over the narrow streets, squares, and car parks of the perched village with a free program from 6 PM to midnight on both evenings.
This 2026 edition featured two major shows scheduled for 9:30 PM: L'Iliade musicale by Compagnie Remue Menage (Friday, starting from Foyer towards Ecoles, a robotic wandering show) and L'Odyssee d'Ulysse, au-dela des dieux by CPPP (Saturday, same route). Both evenings opened with the Grande Parade Festive at 7 PM, led by Compagnie Nomad Nomad with its strange machine, followed by a second wandering passage on Saturday at 10:15 PM.
The 2026 program brought together French and international companies performing in fixed locations or as wandering acts: Cie La Lie (Le probleme avec les femmes, two INSEE investigators on the pétanque court), Cie bAlllAd (Le Marchand de Cris, interactive musical show behind the Cezelly statue and Place de la Republique), La compagnie du vide (Le dressing, interactive clothing installation at the Boulodrome car park), Cie Les Tombes de la Lune (Monique et Marie-Therese, feminist hair salon on rue du Dr Sidras), Espaces Cyclophones (Douche a paillettes, human-powered installation), Mysterieuses Coiffures (Opera pour Fruits et Legumes, Arcimboldo-style art hairstyles), Vladimir Spoutnik (Spoutnik Disco Mobile, quirky DJ on rue de l'Eglise), The Vortexes (Spring-a-Lings, conversational dancing plants), Delire Percussif Organise (Batucada 100% OAI Spirit, golden angels and demons) and International Show Parade (Batucada Tribal de Barcelone + African Masks).
The organization set up a system of free shuttles connecting the village to Port Leucate (from 5:45 PM), La Franqui (from 5:30 PM) and a continuous small train from Leucate Plage (4 PM-1 AM). Free car parks were signposted on the outskirts (P3, P5, P7, P8, P9, P11, P12, P13 on the Port Leucate side). A workshop with Cie Remue Menage brought together local volunteers on Thursday, May 14 at the sports complex. Alcohol consumption stopped at 11:30 PM and breathalyzer checks were planned at the festival exit.
The festival takes place in the streets of Leucate Village (11370).
