The largest urban art festival in Europe
Created in 2015 by the association Spacejunk Grenoble, the Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes is the largest European festival dedicated to street art. Each year, for five weeks, artists from around the world take over the walls of the Grenoble metropolitan area to create new monumental frescoes. With over 470 works created since its inception, the festival transforms the territory into an open-air museum, entirely free. Exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, and workshops punctuate this celebration of urban art at the foot of the Alps.
Since 2015, the Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes has established itself as the largest urban art festival in Europe and an international benchmark in the field of street art. Supported by the association Spacejunk Grenoble, an art center dedicated to street art, lowbrow, and pop surrealism since 2003, the festival has succeeded in transforming the Grenoble metropolitan area into a unique open-air art gallery.
The history of the Street Art Fest is intimately linked to that of Jérôme Catz, director of Spacejunk and an exhibition curator passionate about urban art. His ambition: to democratize access to contemporary art by bringing it directly into the public space, where people live. Since the first edition, the festival has continued to grow, evolving from a local event to an international cultural gathering, attracting artists from all over the world.
Each year, during five weeks of creation, the festival unfolds a rich and varied program: live creation of monumental frescoes, group and solo exhibitions, guided tours on foot and by bike, conferences on urban art, participatory workshops, screenings, concerts, and many other events. The entire program is completely free, in line with the festival's philosophy of making art accessible to everyone.
Over the years, the Street Art Fest has built up a heritage of over 470 mural frescoes scattered throughout the streets of eight municipalities in the Grenoble metropolitan area: Grenoble, Saint-Martin-d'Hères, Meylan, Claix, Gières, Seyssinet-Pariset, Vizille, Saint-Égrève, and, since 2025, Voiron. These monumental works, created by internationally renowned artists, line the routes of soft mobility – tram lines, cycle paths, bus stops – transforming daily commutes into artistic journeys.
Among the artists who have left their mark on the festival are major figures of global street art: Fintan Magee (Australia), Wild Drawing (Indonesia), Mr Dheo (Portugal), Deih (Spain), Louis Masai (United Kingdom), Jace (France), Colectivo Ciclope (Argentina), Snik (United Kingdom), and Etien' (France). This diversity of origins and styles makes Grenoble a true crossroads of contemporary urban creation.
The beating heart of the festival is located at the Ancien Musée de Peinture, on Place de Verdun in Grenoble. This historic venue hosts a group exhibition each year featuring works by invited artists, as well as solo exhibitions dedicated to a major artist on the international scene. The exhibition is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., with free and open access.
After ten years of existence, the Street Art Fest is facing financial difficulties due to a significant drop in institutional support. Public subsidies decreased by 62% between 2023 and 2024. Despite these obstacles, the festival continues its mission thanks to the commitment of a passionate team, about fifty volunteers, and the support of the public through crowdfunding campaigns, demonstrating the resilience and deep attachment of the community to this major cultural event.
The 12th edition of Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes will take place from late May to late June 2026. The largest urban art festival in Europe will continue its mission of transforming the Grenoble metropolitan area into an open-air museum, with new monumental frescoes by international artists, exhibitions, guided tours, and numerous free cultural events.
The Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes returns for its 12th edition in the summer of 2026. For five weeks, from late May to late June, the festival will once again take over the streets of the Grenoble metropolitan area to create new monumental works and offer a rich and varied cultural program.
True to its mission of democratizing contemporary art, the festival will continue to foster dialogue between urban art and public space, inviting internationally renowned artists to work on the walls of the metropolitan area's municipalities. New frescoes will enrich the heritage of over 470 works already created since the festival's inception in 2015.
