About Streisselhochzeit

Created in 1982 by the Union des Associations de Seebach, the Streisselhochzeit ("bouquet wedding" in Alsatian) is an authentic and picturesque reconstruction of a 19th-century peasant wedding. For three days around July 14th, the village with its magnificent half-timbered houses in the Outre-Forêt region transforms into a living theater: a wedding procession in traditional costumes, a wedding banquet, folk dances, traditional music, and arts and crafts. Some 900 volunteers welcome over 20,000 visitors to this unique festival in Alsace.

The "Bouquet Wedding": A Resurrected Alsatian Tradition

The Streisselhochzeit, literally "bouquet wedding" in the Alsatian dialect, was born in 1982 from the desire of the Union des Associations de Seebach to revive the tradition of peasant weddings in the Outre-Forêt. This meticulous and moving reconstruction of a rural wedding as it was celebrated in the 19th century in northern Alsace has become one of the most important and authentic folk events in the region.

A Museum Village with Flowery Half-Timbered Houses

Seebach is one of the most beautiful villages in the Outre-Forêt, this picturesque region of northern Alsace bordering Germany's Palatinate. Its half-timbered houses with white walls and dark beams, its flowery gardens overflowing with geraniums, and its quiet alleys make it a place of remarkable beauty. This authentic setting provides the ideal backdrop for the reconstruction of the traditional wedding, transporting visitors to another era.

The Wedding Procession: The Beating Heart of the Festival

The most spectacular moment of the Streisselhochzeit is the wedding procession. The bride and groom, dressed in traditional 19th-century Alsatian costumes—the bride wearing the characteristic large black bow and the groom in a frock coat—parade through the village streets accompanied by their entourage. Parents, witnesses, guests, musicians, and dancers in period attire create a strikingly authentic living tableau. The "bouquet" (Streissel) that gives the festival its name is a central element of the ceremony.

Three Days of Festivities Between Tradition and Camaraderie

From Friday to Sunday, around July 14th, the entire village participates in the celebration. The program includes a wedding banquet with a traditional Alsatian meal, folk dances performed by local groups, traditional music played by costumed orchestras, an arts and crafts market with artisans, demonstrations of old trades, and numerous activities for children. Sunday is dedicated to the grand wedding procession that travels through the village.

Remarkable Collective Commitment

The Streisselhochzeit is a true feat of community organization. Around 900 volunteers mobilize to welcome over 20,000 visitors during the three days of festivities. Since 2018, the Association Culture et Traditions has taken over to perpetuate this exceptional event. The festival has evolved in recent years: in 2025, it was renamed Summerzeit with a renewed format, but the spirit of the Streisselhochzeit—a celebration of Alsatian traditions in an authentic village setting—remains alive.
