One of the biggest tango festivals in the world
Tarbes en Tango is one of the biggest Argentine tango festivals in the world. Since 1998, this international festival has brought together every summer for nine days the great masters of Argentine tango, dancers and musicians, coming especially from Argentina and around the world. More than 18,000 visitors gather in the emblematic places of the Bigourdane capital — the Jardin Massey, the Théâtre des Nouveautés, the Halle Marcadieu, and the café terraces — to experience a unique event combining shows, concerts, milongas, dance workshops, and conferences on Argentine culture.
Created in 1998 by the Town Hall of Tarbes, Tarbes Tourisme, and the association Tangueando Ibos, the Tarbes en Tango festival has established itself over the years as one of the biggest global gatherings for Argentine tango. For nine days in August, the city of Tarbes lives to the rhythm of tango, welcoming nearly a hundred artists from Argentina and tango enthusiasts from all over the world.
The festival offers an eclectic and ambitious program that celebrates tango in all its forms. The evening shows feature the greatest maestros of tango dance and music in prestigious venues: the Théâtre des Nouveautés, the Jardin Massey, and the Halle Marcadieu. During the day, the sensual and intoxicating atmosphere of tango fills the café terraces with milongas and tango aperitifs.
Festival-goers who wish to practice Argentine tango can register for numerous dance workshops, from beginner to professional levels. Instrument and singing classes complement the educational offerings, allowing everyone to discover or perfect their skills in the art of tango. In-depth dance seminars are also offered for experienced dancers.
Over the years, tango has become an integral part of Tarbes' identity. The city has several monuments dedicated to tango: the Caminito fresco, a Tango monument, and an official book produced by the Argentine Institute for Tourism Promotion in 2013. The festival has forged unbreakable links between Tarbes and Buenos Aires, making the Bigourdane capital a true ambassador of tango in Europe.
Films, exhibitions, conferences, and readings complete the program and allow visitors to delve into the richness of Argentine culture far beyond just the dance.
