A new festival for Thionville
Inaugurated in August 2025, the Adagio Baroque Festival is the first festival entirely dedicated to baroque music in Thionville. Supported by the City of Thionville and hosted in the Adagio hall, this new musical event aims to become a benchmark for early music in the Grand Est region and beyond its borders.
An excellent program
The festival offers a high-level program over two days that explores the richness of the baroque repertoire:
Inaugural 2025 Edition
The first edition (August 30-31, 2025) brought together leading artists:
- Sonia Wieder-Atherton: internationally renowned cellist, she performed the Suites for solo cello by J.S. Bach, a pinnacle of baroque music for this instrument.
- Salomé Gasselin: young prodigy of the harpsichord and early music.
- Benjamin Narvey: countertenor specializing in French baroque repertoire.
- Hasnaa Bennani: soprano recognized for her interpretations of the baroque repertoire.
- Kevin Seddiki: virtuoso guitarist who dialogues with early music.
Themed Concerts
The program is structured around concerts with evocative themes:
- "Doux Silence" (Sweet Silence): a program of French court airs, intimate vocal pieces from the 17th century.
- "Jardins suspendus" (Hanging Gardens): a musical journey between East and West.
- Bach Suites: the monument of literature for solo cello.
Cinema and baroque music
The festival is not limited to concerts. A screening of the film "Farinelli" (1994) at the La Scala cinema opened the festivities on August 29, inviting the public to dive into the fascinating world of castrati and baroque opera through the big screen.
The Adagio Hall
The Adagio hall, located at 8 place Marie-Louise in Thionville, offers an ideal intimate setting for baroque music. Its careful acoustics and modest capacity create a rare closeness between musicians and the audience, allowing every nuance of the early repertoire to be savored in optimal conditions.
Cross-border reach
Located a few kilometers from Luxembourg and Germany, the Adagio Baroque Festival naturally appeals to a cross-border audience. It contributes to the cultural influence of Thionville and its agglomeration by offering a demanding musical program that complements the programming of NEST and other cultural institutions in the region.
