The Transhumance Festival of Chamrousse: A Living Mountain Tradition

Every summer, the resort of Chamrousse, perched at 1750 meters above sea level in the Belledonne massif, hosts the Transhumance Festival, a unique event celebrating the ancestral passage of herds to the summer pastures. This popular and family-friendly festival offers visitors a rare opportunity to accompany a shepherd and his thousand sheep on an unforgettable mountain walk.

The Great Walk with the Herd

The meeting point is at the foot of the Bachat-Bouloud chairlift in Chamrousse 1750 for the start of the walk, accompanied by Jean Michel the accordionist. The procession heads towards the Lauze lake, offering spectacular panoramas of the surrounding mountains. The family walk lasts about an hour along the mountainside.

The departure time may vary depending on the animals and the weather. It is recommended to arrive a little early.

Free Activities All Day Long

After the transhumance, numerous free activities await visitors on site:

  • Exhibition of the giant straw mouflon: an impressive sculpture made from natural materials
  • Ritournelle Carousel: a poetic carousel for the little ones
  • Giant Wooden Games: a fun course for the whole family
  • Bubble Workshop: creating giant soap bubbles
  • Traditional Dauphiné Dances with the association Rigodons et Traditions
  • Face Painting for children
  • "Sculpt Your Edelweiss" Workshop: artisanal creation in wood

Open-Air Circus Show

The day is punctuated by an open-air circus show, offering a moment of poetry and acrobatics in the magnificent mountain setting. Contemporary circus companies are invited each year to present performances adapted to the exceptional natural environment of Chamrousse.

A Festival in the Heart of the Mountains

The Transhumance Festival is part of the Chamrousse summer program, a resort renowned for its mountain activities and preserved natural environment. The event recalls the alpine pastoral traditions and the importance of mountain farming, while offering a moment of conviviality accessible to all.
