Villes en Scène: Performing Arts Closer to the People of Manche

Since 1997, the Manche Department has been committed to disseminating performing arts in rural areas through the Villes en Scène program. This unique cultural program allows municipalities and inter-municipalities with limited resources to offer quality professional shows in fields as varied as theater, dance, music, circus, and humor.

An Eclectic and Accessible Program

Each season, from October to May, Villes en Scène offers about twenty shows for around 75 performances spread across partner municipalities in Manche. The program aims to be touching, poetic, incisive, wild, and funny, accessible to all audiences. The shows are presented in municipal halls, cultural spaces, and sometimes in unusual locations within the department.

An Exemplary Territorial Network

The program relies on close partnerships between the Department and the inter-municipalities of Manche. In Saint-Lô Agglo, for example, the program includes the municipalities of Tessy-Bocage (since 2016), Thèreval (since 2017), Saint-Jean-d'Elle (since 2021), and Canisy (since 2023). The Department provides technical, administrative, and financial support to ensure the artistic quality of the shows offered.

Over 25 Years of Performing Arts

In over a quarter of a century of existence, Villes en Scène has allowed thousands of people in Manche to discover performing arts without having to travel to big cities. The program contributes to the cultural dynamism of rural areas and to social cohesion in the municipalities of Manche, remaining true to its mission of making culture accessible to all.
