Traveling shows along the Yonne river, between nature and poetry
The "Voyage au Fil de l'Eau" is a traveling performing arts festival that journeys along the Yonne river in the department of the same name. Each summer, theater, music, and street arts companies take over the riverbanks, villages, and natural riverside sites to present creations linked to water, nature, and the territory's memory. A poetic and bucolic event rooted in the Icaunais landscape.
The Yonne river is the soul of the department that borrowed its name. Born in the Morvan, it crosses the massif before stretching north through Auxerre, Joigny, Sens, to join the Seine at Montereau-Fault-Yonne. Its banks, villages, castles, and changing landscapes form an area of extraordinary richness, which has inspired poets, painters, and artists for centuries.
It is in this exceptional natural setting that the Voyage au Fil de l'Eau takes place, a traveling performing arts festival that sets out each summer to meet residents and tourists along the waterway. Several artistic companies—theater, music, dance, street arts, puppetry—occupy the riverbanks, village squares, gardens, bridges, and natural spaces to present creations designed in connection with the aquatic element and the territorial identity.
The festival's traveling nature is at the heart of its artistic project. It is not a festival centralized in one location, but an event that moves from site to site, from village to village, along the river and through time. Each performance takes place in a chosen location for its connection to water: landscaped riverbanks, riverside gardens, bridges, washhouses, floodplains, or remarkable natural sites.
This approach allows the festival to reach diverse audiences and highlight often unknown or little-visited places. It also creates a strong connection between the artistic work and its environment: the sounds of the river, the changing light, the scents of nature, and the movement of water become an integral part of the performance.
The companies invited by Voyage au Fil de l'Eau are chosen for their relationship with public space, nature, and the territory. Their creations evoke:
The festival programs a variety of artistic forms adapted to natural settings:
Voyage au Fil de l'Eau is also an invitation to (re)discover the Yonne department from an artistic and sensitive perspective. For both residents and visitors, it is an opportunity to explore the riverbanks on foot, by bike, or by boat, and to let the artworks reveal the hidden beauty of a region often passed through without being truly seen. The festival is fully integrated into the tourist and cultural promotion of the Val d'Yonne.
Voyage au Fil de l'Eau 2026 resumes its journey along the Yonne river for two weeks of open-air traveling shows. From early to mid-July, the riverbanks, villages, and natural sites of the Yonne region will host theater, music, and street arts companies whose creations engage with nature and the river's memory of the territory.
For the 2026 edition, the Voyage au Fil de l'Eau sets out again to explore the Yonne territory from July 4 to 19, 2026. For two weeks, several artistic companies will travel along the banks of the Yonne river to present creations linked to water, nature, and the inhabitants of the villages they pass through.
On the program: open-air theater, acoustic concerts, performances and installations on site, storytelling and poetic readings on the riverbanks and in natural spaces. Each performance takes place in a unique setting—riverside gardens, floodplains, washhouses, bridges, village squares—transforming each site into an ephemeral stage.
All performances are free and open to all. The map of sites and schedules will be available from the organizing association and the Yonne Tourist Office starting in spring 2026.
The festival unfolds across several sites along the Yonne river, primarily in the Auxerre area (89000) and neighboring municipalities. The exact locations vary each year depending on the program and the invited companies.
Most of the shows are free and open to all, in line with the festival's philosophy of cultural accessibility in rural areas.
The program and site map are available on the website of the organizing association and at the Yonne Tourist Office.
