About Artextures

Artextures is the contemporary textile art competition organized by the France Patchwork association. Its traveling exhibition stops at the Manufacture Bohin in Saint-Sulpice-sur-Risle, in the Orne department. Held every two years, the competition highlights works that go beyond traditional patchwork, including sculpture, dyeing, printing, sewing, weaving, braiding, embroidery, collage, crochet, felting, and quilting. The selected pieces are showcased in the workshops of the last remaining French needle and pin factory, which has been in operation since 1833.

Manufacture Bohin, the last French needle manufacturer

Benjamin Bohin founded the company in 1833, and the Saint-Sulpice-sur-Risle factory was acquired in 1866. Today, it is the last place in France that manufactures sewing needles and pins. The facades and roofs of several production workshops, the boiler room, the office, and the caretaker's lodge have been listed as historical monuments since 1995.

About forty employees work there. It takes 27 steps and two months to produce a single needle, from the steel coil to the final packaging. The site is open to visitors, featuring active production workshops, a museum, an exhibition hall, and a boutique gallery. Murano glass-headed pins, pincushion bracelets, and safety pins are also manufactured here.

The Artextures competition

France Patchwork organizes Artextures every two years to identify and support new talents in textile art and integrate them into the history of contemporary art. A jury of professionals—including visual artists, embroiderers, lace makers, gallery owners, and artistic directors—selects the works, which then embark on a traveling exhibition from one venue to another.

The 11th edition in 2021 brought together 35 artists and visited the Manufacture Bohin, the Château de l'Étang de Saran near Orléans, and finally Paris. The 13th edition, "Artextures & Co — New Paths for Patchwork," will be at Bohin from September 2nd to October 31st, 2025, featuring the 50 x 50 cm patchworks from the Émeraude competition, before moving to the Musée de la Toile de Jouy in Jouy-en-Josas from January 30th to March 1st, 2026.
