The Assaut des Remparts: The Biggest Medieval Festival in the Haut-Jura

Since 1988, the Assaut des Remparts has enlivened the streets of Nozeroy, one of France's smallest towns and former capital of the powerful seigneurie de Chalon, every summer. For an entire day, this medieval town, perched at 800 meters altitude in the Haut-Jura, transforms into a medieval village, welcoming thousands of visitors who come to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of this fascinating era.

A Complete Medieval Immersion

The Assaut des Remparts offers a total immersion into the medieval world. As soon as the town gates open, visitors are transported to another time:

• Musicians and minstrels roaming the streets with their period instruments
• Acrobats and jugglers offering breathtaking street performances
• Storytellers narrating legends and tales from the Middle Ages
• Artisan crafts demonstrating ancestral skills: blacksmithing, pottery, wood carving, illumination

The Medieval Banquet

The medieval banquet, served at tables starting at 12:30 PM, is one of the day's highlights. Prepared according to medieval-inspired recipes, it allows guests to share a festive meal in the unique atmosphere of the fortified town. This banquet is available by reservation and includes a full menu with site entry.

Nozeroy, an Exceptional Medieval Town

Classified among the "Petites Cités Comtoises de Caractère" (Small Towns of Character in Franche-Comté), Nozeroy preserves a remarkable architectural heritage: ramparts, the Clock Tower gate, ruins of the Chalon castle, and the Saint-Antoine collegiate church. Organized by the Comité d'Animation de Nozeroy, the Assaut des Remparts relies on the commitment of dozens of passionate volunteers who, each year, transform their village into a place of celebration and historical discovery.
