Six days of chamber and classical music concerts in a heritage village on the Garonne
The Auvillar Musical Week brings together passionate amateur and professional musicians at the beginning of August in one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. For six days, chamber music concerts, classical recitals, and musical picnics will liven up the circular market hall, the Saint-Pierre church, and the village spaces, with the traditional visit of musicians from the twin town of Tübingen.
Every early August, the village of Auvillar transforms into a temporary musical stage. The Auvillar Musical Week brings together amateur and professional musicians for six days who share their passion for chamber and classical music in the exceptional spaces of this village classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
The event is founded on a simple and generous principle: musicians from all over France—and Germany, thanks to the special link with the twin town of Tübingen—meet in Auvillar to play together, rehearse, perform for the public, and share their love of music. This dimension of meeting and exchange between musicians of different levels and backgrounds is at the heart of the Musical Week's identity.
One of the most endearing characteristics of the Musical Week is the traditional welcome extended to musicians from Tübingen, a university town in Baden-Württemberg twinned with Auvillar. Each year, a delegation of German musicians makes the journey to join their French counterparts in a spirit of Franco-German friendship and musical sharing.
This international dimension gives the Musical Week a special flavor: it is both a local festival rooted in its territory and a small window onto musical Europe. The concerts that bring together French and German musicians create moments of emotion and communion that only music can produce, beyond language barriers.
The Musical Week intelligently utilizes the exceptional heritage spaces of Auvillar for its various events.
The 18th-century circular market hall, with its stone columns and remarkable acoustics, hosts the impromptus—informal and festive concerts where musicians play in a relaxed manner for the general public under the circular vaults. This format of impromptu concerts under the market hall has become one of the signatures of the Musical Week, combining the beauty of the monument with the spontaneity of musical performance.
The Saint-Pierre church of Auvillar, with its Romanesque chapels and natural acoustics, hosts more solemn concerts and chamber recitals. The ancient stone amplifies and colors the sounds of string instruments and piano, creating an intense listening experience.
The village gardens and outdoor spaces host the musical picnics, moments of conviviality where music and gastronomy meet in the Occitan summer light.
The Auvillar Musical Week's programming covers a wide range of chamber and classical music repertoire: string quartets, piano trios, sonatas, lieder, 19th-century salon music, and sometimes openings to more contemporary repertoires or film and popular music arranged for chamber ensembles.
This diversity of genres within the same aesthetic—that of music played in small ensembles, with the demands and precision it requires—allows the festival to welcome diverse audiences, from classical music regulars to neophytes curious to discover this repertoire in a friendly setting.
The choice of Auvillar as the venue for this musical week is no coincidence. This village perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Garonne, with its half-timbered houses, paved medieval streets, and its unique circular market hall in the Southwest, offers music a setting of rare beauty and intimacy.
Auvillar is also a stop on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, which gives it an atmosphere of passage and welcome, of openness to encounters and exchanges, perfectly in keeping with the spirit of a musical week founded on sharing. Passing pilgrims sometimes stop to listen to an impromptu concert under the market hall or a rehearsal in the church, adding a touch of the unexpected and humanity to the event.
