Banlieusard et Alors ? was an alternative festival based on an observation and a claim. The observation: French suburbs, often depicted in a negative light, were in reality territories of great cultural richness. The claim: to be proud of it and to showcase it through a multidisciplinary festival that presented what the suburbs create and invent.
Rooted in Seine-Saint-Denis, the festival was organized by the association Culture de banlieue and took place in three neighboring cities — Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers, and La Courneuve — usually in February, over about ten days.
The program brought together all artistic disciplines centered on hip-hop and urban cultures:
Banlieusard et Alors ? was not intended to be a mere entertainment festival: it was a cultural and committed act, in the vein of movements that chose to reclaim stigmas and transform the suburbs into a richness to be celebrated. The association Culture de banlieue sought to promote access to culture for the greatest number and to unite the artistic action of suburban cities.
