Festival of popular cultures and suburban pride in Saint-Denis
Banlieusard et Alors? is a festival affirming the pride of popular cultures and suburbs, rooted in Saint-Denis. It celebrates the creative richness of peripheral territories through music, visual arts, literature, cinema, and debates. Supported by cultural actors from the 93, it invites us to deconstruct negative representations and celebrate the cultures that are invented in the suburbs.
The festival Banlieusard et Alors? stems from an observation and a demand. The observation: French suburbs, often depicted through a negative lens in the media and political discourse, are in reality territories of exceptional cultural richness. The demand: to be proud of it, to say it loud and clear, and to show it through a multidisciplinary festival that showcases and highlights all that the suburbs create, invent, and bring to life.
Rooted in Saint-Denis, one of the most emblematic cities of Seine-Saint-Denis, the festival is driven by cultural actors from the territory who are themselves part of these suburbs they celebrate. This dimension of authenticity and militant commitment gives it a strong and unique identity.
Banlieusard et Alors? engages in all artistic disciplines to paint a vibrant and multifaceted portrait of suburban creativity:
Saint-Denis is the ideal territory to host such a festival. City of the royal Basilica and the Stade de France, it is also one of the most diverse cities in France—with over 100 nationalities represented—and one of the most creative, despite real economic and social difficulties. Its artists, creators, and associations bear witness to an incomparable cultural vitality.
The festival takes over the city's cultural venues—le 6b, associative halls, public spaces—to be as close as possible to the residents and affirm that culture is not reserved for bourgeois urban centers.
Banlieusard et Alors? is not simply a festival of entertainment: it is a cultural and political act. It follows in the tradition of movements that have decided to turn stigmas around, to transform shame into pride, to make the suburbs no longer a problem to be solved but a richness to be celebrated.
Banlieusard et Alors? returns to Saint-Denis in October 2026 for a weekend celebrating popular cultures and suburban pride, with concerts, exhibitions, screenings, and debates. Program to be confirmed on the festival's social media.
