Beach Art Festival: When Sand Becomes a Masterpiece Canvas
Since its creation, the Beach Art Festival in Fort-Mahon-Plage has established itself as a unique event in the French cultural landscape. This eco-responsible and fun festival, the only one of its kind in France, transforms the vast fine sandy beach of Fort-Mahon into a life-size ephemeral art gallery every September. Beach art artists from all over France and Europe create monumental frescoes and drawings directly on the sand, using simple tools—rakes, sticks, ropes—creating geometric, figurative, or abstract works that will only last as long as the tide.
Ephemeral Art as a Philosophy
The Beach Art Festival celebrates the beauty of the ephemeral. Each artwork created on the sand is destined to disappear, washed away by the rising tide a few hours after its completion. This ephemeral dimension is not a drawback but the very heart of the festival: it invites spectators and participants to savor the present moment, to contemplate the fragile beauty of these monumental creations, and to reflect on our relationship with nature and the passage of time.
The sand drawing challenges are at the core of the festival. Three categories are offered: the Family Challenge, open to families; the Solo Challenge, reserved for experienced artists; and the Children's Challenge, dedicated to the youngest. Armed with simple tools, participants transform the beach into a succession of giant paintings visible from the dunes and the top of the beach.
A Festival Committed to the Environment
The Beach Art Festival stands out for its strong environmental commitment. The festival is designed as an eco-responsible event, with the aim of raising public awareness about the preservation of the coastline and marine environments. Concrete actions include collective beach clean-ups, inviting festival-goers and locals to collect stranded waste; a recycling market offering objects and creations made from recovered materials; and creative workshops for children using recycled materials as artistic media.
Nature conferences, educational activities on coastal flora and fauna, and human-powered activities (smoothie bikes, human-powered carousel) complement the festival's ecological dimension. All this is done in a positive and fun spirit, without guilt, appealing to families and visitors of all ages.
Fort-Mahon-Plage: A Vast Beach for Art
Fort-Mahon-Plage boasts one of the largest fine sandy beaches in northern France, stretching for several kilometers as far as the eye can see. This immensity offers an exceptional playground for beach art, allowing for the creation of frescoes several tens of meters in diameter. The seaside resort, located between the Baie d'Authie to the north and the Baie de Somme to the south, benefits from a preserved natural environment, with dunes, marshes, and coastal forests.
