The largest sound and light show in the Hauts-de-France region
Le Souffle de la Terre is the largest sound and light show in the Hauts-de-France region. Presented every summer in Ailly-sur-Noye since 1986, this monumental show retraces 20,000 years of Picardy's history in a 90-minute living fresco combining pyrotechnic effects, light shows, music, and theater. Supported by an association of nearly 800 volunteers who embody 3,500 characters, this exceptional event attracts thousands of spectators every year on Friday and Saturday evenings from August to mid-September at the Espace Pierre Normand.
Since 1986, the small town of Ailly-sur-Noye, nestled in the Noye valley south of Amiens, has hosted one of the most impressive live shows in northern France. Le Souffle de la Terre is a monumental sound and light show that retraces 20,000 years of Picardy's history in a 90-minute living fresco, from prehistory to contemporary times.
Le Souffle de la Terre is not just a historical show. It is a true scenic epic that mobilizes considerable technical resources: spectacular pyrotechnic effects, light projections, monumental sets, an orchestral soundtrack, large-scale stunts, and choreography. The open-air stage at the Espace Pierre Normand, specially designed for the show, offers a playing area of several thousand square meters, transformed into a medieval battlefield, a Gallo-Roman village, a Gothic cathedral, or a World War I trench at each performance.
What sets Le Souffle de la Terre apart from other sound and light shows in France is the scale of volunteer mobilization. Nearly 800 volunteers, residents of Ailly-sur-Noye and surrounding towns, participate each year in the show's production. They embody no less than 3,500 characters throughout the historical scenes, taking turns in the roles of Gaulish warriors, medieval knights, Picard peasants, World War I soldiers, or World War II resistance fighters.
The show unfolds in a succession of grandiose historical scenes. Spectators journey through the major periods of the region's history: the first hunter-gatherers of the Somme valley, the Gaulish Ambiani people, Romanization and the founding of Samarobriva (Amiens), barbarian invasions, the construction of Gothic cathedrals, the Wars of Religion, the French Revolution, Picardy's industrial epic, the terrible battles of the Somme in 1916, the Liberation, and reconstruction.
Each scene is driven by spectacular staging that blends historical reenactment, dramatic emotion, and technical prowess. The pyrotechnic effects are particularly striking, with explosions, flames, and fireworks integrated into the historical narrative. The soundtrack, specially composed for the show, accompanies each sequence with cinematic intensity.
Le Souffle de la Terre is above all a collective adventure. The association behind the show mobilizes entire families, young and old, in a common project that goes far beyond entertainment. Rehearsals begin in the spring, volunteers make costumes, build sets, and perfect choreography. This mobilization makes Le Souffle de la Terre a social binder for an entire rural territory, a place for intergenerational transmission and local pride.
In 2026, the show will celebrate its 40th anniversary, a remarkable longevity that makes it one of the oldest and most popular sound and light shows in France, alongside Puy du Fou in Vendée or the Nuits Lumière in Bourges.
