The great medieval festival of Crépy-en-Valois around the pig
Les Cochons de Crépy is a popular medieval festival held every last weekend of August at the Parc Sainte-Agathe in Crépy-en-Valois, in the Oise region. Since its creation in 1999, this festive and family-friendly event immerses visitors in the heart of the Middle Ages with an artisan market, demonstrations of ancient crafts, medieval warrior combat, street theater, juggling, and, of course, the traditional spit-roasted pig. The pig squealing contest, a must-see event on Sunday, attracts thousands of curious onlookers each year in a green and friendly setting.
Each year, on the last weekend of August, the Parc Sainte-Agathe in Crépy-en-Valois transforms into a true medieval village. Les Cochons de Crépy, founded in 1999, has become one of the most popular festive events in the Oise department, attracting thousands of visitors for two days of entertainment, shows, and medieval gastronomy.
The festival features a market of flavors and crafts where blacksmiths, potters, basket makers, and carpenters bring ancient trades back to life before a fascinated audience. A reconstructed wattle-and-daub village allows visitors to discover daily life in the Middle Ages, while historical reenactment groups animate medieval warrior combat with swords, shields, and armor.
Throughout the weekend, street theater companies, jugglers, musicians, and storytellers take over the park's pathways. On Saturday evening, a grand concert concludes the first day in a festive atmosphere. Hands-on workshops allow children to try their hand at archery, calligraphy, or shield making.
The highlight of the festival, the pig squealing contest, takes place on Sunday afternoon at 5 PM. Young and old are invited to let out their best pig squeal in front of an amused jury, in a good-natured atmosphere that has made the event famous.
The pig is obviously in the spotlight: spit-roasted pig, grills, soups, and other medieval-inspired dishes delight visitors. Food stalls and a refreshment stand offer local products and artisanal drinks throughout the weekend.
Crépy-en-Valois, a former royal city and the cradle of the Valois dynasty, provides an ideal historical backdrop for this medieval festival. The Parc Sainte-Agathe, a vast green space in the heart of the town, hosts the event in a bucolic setting conducive to strolling and discovery.
Access to the festival is completely free, contributing to the event's popular and inclusive nature. Parking lots are available near the park to facilitate visitor access.
