A day in the 13th century in the royal city of Senlis
Every two years, the city of Senlis revives its prestigious medieval past through the Medieval Fair "In the Time of Chancellor Guérin". This event pays tribute to Brother Guérin, Bishop of Senlis and Chancellor of France under Philip Augustus, a major figure in the city's history in the 13th century.
The fair takes over several emblematic sites in Senlis: the Royal Castle park, the King's Garden, the parvis of Notre-Dame Cathedral, and Saint-Frambourg square. Each space offers themed activities that transport visitors to the heart of the Middle Ages.
Dozens of artisans showcase their skills: blacksmithing, stained glass, pottery, calligraphy, illumination, and weapon making. Visitors can observe ancestral techniques and interact with passionate artisans who perpetuate these traditions.
Life-size reconstructions of medieval war machines—trebuchets, catapults, and bombards—are presented with firing demonstrations that fascinate the public. Historical reenactment groups stage sword fights and military maneuvers.
A medieval gastronomic market offers period dishes: pastries, sweets, jams, honey, cheeses, charcuterie, and medieval drinks. Visitors discover the flavors of the Middle Ages in an authentic atmosphere.
Medieval music groups and dance troupes liven up the city streets throughout the day. Children's workshops allow the youngest to try their hand at medieval arts: crown making, calligraphy, archery, and skill games.
Senlis, with its Gallo-Roman ramparts, its 12th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral, and its royal castle, offers an authentic and majestic backdrop for this medieval fair. The city, which was one of the favorite residences of the Kings of France, provides an incomparable heritage setting.
The entire fair is free and open to all, allowing everyone to enjoy this dive into French history.
Senlis is located in the south of the Oise department, 50 km north of Paris and 10 km from Chantilly.
The fair takes place across several sites: Royal Castle park, King's Garden, parvis of Notre-Dame Cathedral, and Saint-Frambourg square.
The fair takes place every two years, in odd-numbered years, usually at the end of September.
Free admission.
