First international surf film festival in the Greater West
Created in 2017, the Brest Surf Film Festival (BSFF) quickly established itself as the first international surf film festival in the Greater West. Every year in May, the festival takes over Océanopolis, the national center for scientific culture dedicated to the oceans, for four days and four nights of screenings, meetings, and activities centered around surf and oceanic culture.
The festival selects the best surf film productions from around the world: documentaries, fiction, adventure, and travel films. Directors and artists are invited to present their works and interact with the public. An international film call is launched each year via the FilmFreeway platform, attracting productions from all continents.
Beyond the screenings, the BSFF offers numerous daytime activities: guided surf sessions, stand-up paddleboarding, yoga on the beach, workshops on marine environment awareness, and meetings with professional athletes. The evenings are filled with concerts and DJ sets at Océanopolis, creating a unique festive atmosphere blending cinema, sport, and music.
The festival is part of a strong environmental approach, in partnership with the French Office for Biodiversity and Océanopolis. The selected films often address issues of ocean protection, marine biodiversity, and sustainable development. The BSFF raises public awareness about the preservation of the marine environment while celebrating surf culture and board sports.
Located in the heart of Océanopolis, the national center for scientific culture dedicated to the oceans, the festival benefits from a unique setting in Europe. The Moulin Blanc marina, with its beach and nautical facilities, allows for a combination of film screenings and sports activities. Brest, an oceanic city par excellence, offers an ideal environment for a festival that places the ocean at the center of all attention.
The 9th edition of the Brest Surf Film Festival took place from May 13 to 16, 2026 at Océanopolis in Brest. Four evenings of screenings (starting at 6:30 PM) with a selection of 21 international surf films — short, medium, and feature films, mostly unreleased in France — accompanied by meetings with directors, daytime water activities (surf, paddle, yoga sessions), and concerts within the Océanopolis premises.
The Brest Surf Film Festival celebrated its 9th edition from Wednesday, May 13 to Saturday, May 16, 2026 at Océanopolis, with a poster designed by illustrator Simon Bailly titled « Upside Down ». The edition hosted 21 selected films (short, medium, and feature films) starting at 6:30 PM each evening, including a majority of French premieres and world sneak previews.
Each evening was organized into two screening sessions: a 7 PM session featuring short and medium-length films, followed by a 9 PM session focused on a documentary feature film. Five Breton films were presented as sneak previews (Kilian Burac, Grégory Mignard, Sacha Panou, Owen Le Goff & Ian Fontaine), and many directors were present for meetings with the public.
Among the highlights: « Mor Ha Kalon. Portés par la même vague » by Kilian Burac (Bretagne, sneak preview) opening on Wednesday, « You should have been here yesterday » by Jolyon Hoff (Australia, 80 min), « GUTS, a female expedition through Africa » by Patrizia Bruno (Italy, 64 min) on Thursday evening, « Antarctica – Domain One » by the Gauchos del Mar brothers (Argentina, 94 min) on Friday as the evening's closing film, and « Forward » by Nic Collar (Canada, 66 min) as the closing film on Saturday.
Beyond the screenings, the 2026 edition continued its tradition of daytime water activities (surf, stand-up paddle, yoga), evening concerts and DJ sets (provided by Les Platinistes), and on-site catering (Ö P'tits Oignons and Rock Ha Billig). The Bretagne pavilion of Océanopolis was specially opened for festival-goers, despite the center's renovation work.
