Looking at the world's peoples through cinema
Created in 1978, the Festival de Cinéma de Douarnenez is a major event for committed cinema in Brittany. Each summer, for a week in August, the festival highlights a people or culture through a rich program of over 140 films: documentaries, fiction, short and feature films. The festival also offers debates, concerts, exhibitions, and meetings with filmmakers, in a friendly and activist atmosphere by the bay of Douarnenez.
The Festival de Cinéma de Douarnenez, born in 1978 from a group of film enthusiasts linked to the MJC of Douarnenez, is one of the oldest film festivals in Brittany. Every August, it welcomes thousands of spectators for a program dedicated to a people or culture from around the world. The festival is part of a tradition of militant and committed cinema, born in the context of Breton struggles and resistance to the Plogoff nuclear project.
With over 140 films screened over a week, the festival offers an exceptional program mixing documentaries, fiction, short and feature films. Each edition explores in depth the culture, history, and struggles of a people: in 2025, the Peoples of the Amazon; in 2026, the peoples of Morocco. In parallel with the main theme, the festival programs the Grande Tribu section, films related to previous editions, a Deaf World section, an LGBTQIA+ track, and Young Audience screenings.
Beyond the screenings, the festival is a true space for dialogue and reflection. Debates, round tables, and meetings with directors punctuate each day. Concerts, exhibitions, and live performances complete the program. The festival takes place in several locations in Douarnenez, notably the Yvonne-Jean-Haffen hall, the Le Club cinema, and outdoor spaces facing the bay.
Deeply rooted in Finistère, the festival is also an event with an international reach. It hosts filmmakers, artists, and activists from around the world, making Douarnenez a unique cultural crossroads for a week. The association Daoulagad Breizh, which organizes the festival, is committed to cultural diversity, the rights of peoples, and making cinema accessible to all audiences.
The 48th edition of the Festival de Cinéma de Douarnenez will take place from August 15 to 22, 2026, dedicated to the peoples of Morocco. A week of committed cinema in the heart of Finistère.
