About Camp de Base

Created in 2023 in Aussois, at the foot of the Vanoise National Park, the Camp de Base Festival is an immersive event dedicated to nature, mountains, and documentary filmmaking. For four days in July, the village of Haute-Maurienne transforms into a base camp for a 360° exploration: documentary film screenings, inspiring encounters with adventurers and scientists, immersive workshops, guided hikes, nature outings, and live performances. Each edition is built around a strong environmental theme—women in the mountains, air, water, earth—which permeates the entire program. Free and open to all, the festival celebrates the mountains as a space for discovery, reflection, and sharing.

Camp de Base Festival: Exploring Vanoise Differently

The Camp de Base Festival is a cultural and environmental event that began in 2023 in Aussois, a charming village in Haute-Maurienne Vanoise located at an altitude of 1,500 meters, at the gateway to the Vanoise National Park. Over four days each summer, the festival offers a total immersion into the challenges of mountains and the environment through the lens of documentary, encounters, and field experience.

A Thematic and Engaged Festival

Each edition of the Camp de Base Festival revolves around a strong environmental theme that structures the entire program. The first edition (2023) explored the theme of women in the mountains, the second (2024) that of mountain air, the third (2025) that of water—from its source at the summit to its impact in the plains—and the fourth (2026) will be dedicated to earth, in connection with the International Year of Pastoralism.

Inspiring Screenings and Encounters

The festival screens documentary films selected for their cinematic quality and thematic relevance. Directors, protagonists, and experts are invited to present their films and engage in discussions and round tables with the audience. The festival has hosted personalities such as Nouria Newman, world champion extreme kayaker, who presented her film Big Water Theory during the 2025 edition.

Nature Outings and Immersive Workshops

One of the unique aspects of the Camp de Base Festival is its move beyond screening rooms to engage in direct field encounters. The program includes guided hikes on foot and by mountain bike, photography workshops, open-air conferences, explorations of agricultural and pastoral heritage, and activities to discover the fauna and flora of Vanoise. These outings, led by mountain professionals and naturalists, offer a unique immersive experience.

Live Performances and Camaraderie

The festival features live performances—theater, artistic performances, concerts—that extend the thematic reflection in a creative and poetic manner. The evenings are moments of camaraderie where Aussois residents, vacationers, and festival-goers gather to share a drink, chat, and celebrate the mountains.

Aussois: A Village at the Foot of Vanoise

Aussois is an authentic village in Haute-Maurienne, dominated by the Esseillon forts and surrounded by peaks exceeding 3,000 meters. Its exceptional natural setting, rich heritage, and village atmosphere make it an ideal location for a festival dedicated to mountains and the environment.
