Costumed cavalcade and spring parade in Châtillon
Every spring, Châtillon celebrates its Carnival with a grand costumed parade through the town's streets. Organized by the Centre Social La Passerelle and local associations, this popular and free event brings together children, families, and residents for a colorful cavalcade that winds through the neighborhoods of this dynamic town in the southern Hauts-de-Seine.
Châtillon is a town in the southern Hauts-de-Seine, with nearly 34,000 inhabitants, bordering Montrouge, Bagneux, Clamart, and Malakoff. A town with a young demographic and a dynamic associative fabric, Châtillon celebrates its Carnival every spring, in a festive and shared popular atmosphere that mobilizes the local community well in advance of the big day.
The Carnaval de Châtillon is a collective initiative led notably by the Centre Social La Passerelle, which brings together local associations to organize this event. Preparation involves children and adults for several weeks, crafting costumes, decorations, and floats. The Social Center is at the heart of the project, but other local players—neighborhood associations, schools, festival committees—contribute to making the carnival a representative event of the diversity and vitality of the Châtillon community.
On Carnival day, a costumed parade crosses the main streets of Châtillon in a festive and musical atmosphere. Groups with elaborate costumes, often built around a common theme, follow one another in the procession, accompanied by various music—brass bands, percussion, mobile DJs—that set the rhythm and get spectators dancing along the route.
The parade usually ends in a town square or park where the festivities continue: confetti throws, symbolic burning of King Carnival, musical entertainment, and food stalls. This festive epilogue allows participants and spectators to gather and extend the celebration in a convivial atmosphere.
The Carnaval de Châtillon is part of a strong tradition of collective life. The town has a dense network of associations and numerous community facilities: social centers, neighborhood houses, media libraries, sports fields. The carnival is one of the most visible manifestations of this community spirit, making Châtillon a town where it's good to live together, regardless of origin or social status. The free admission is an affirmed political choice: the carnival is for everyone, without exception.
