The great popular carnival of Berry
The Carnaval de Levroux is an unmissable festive event in the Indre department. Since its creation in 1992, this popular event has animated the center of this medieval town of character every year, known for its Saint-Sylvain collegiate church and its half-timbered houses. Organized on a Sunday in March, the carnival transforms the Place de la République into an open-air theater where colors, music, and good cheer reign supreme.
The heart of the Carnaval de Levroux is its grand parade of floats, carefully prepared by residents and local associations during the weeks leading up to the event. The cavalcade winds through the town's streets in an explosion of colors, confetti, and music. The floats, often designed around an annual theme, compete in creativity and ingenuity. The procession is accompanied by costumed groups, brass bands, and street performers who create a festive and lively atmosphere for the spectators gathered along the route.
Throughout the afternoon, musical artists provide entertainment and create a buzz in the Place de la République. The carnival is punctuated by moments of dance, singing, and games that involve the public of all ages. The highlight of the day is the spectacular fire show that concludes the festivities: the symbolic mannequin of the carnival is delivered to the flames in a theatrical scene marking the end of winter and the arrival of spring, according to carnival tradition.
In the lead-up to the carnival, the Levroux library organizes creative workshops open to children aged 4 and up. On the program: making personalized masks, professional makeup by an artist, games, and a snack offered. These free workshops, by registration, allow the youngest to prepare for the big party and strengthen the participatory dimension of the event. The carnival is thus a true collective project that mobilizes the local community.
Free and open to all, the Carnaval de Levroux is part of the long tradition of carnival festivities in Berry, which mark the transition from winter to spring. It contributes to the influence of Levroux, a labeled small town of character, and offers a moment of conviviality and intergenerational sharing. With its 34 editions, it has become a landmark in the festive calendar of the Indre and attracts visitors from all over the department and neighboring towns each year.
The Carnaval de Levroux returns in March 2026 for its 35th edition. The Place de la République will once again host the grand parade of floats, the colorful cavalcade, and the musical entertainment that have made this popular Berry carnival famous. The spectacular fire show will conclude the festivities.
Levroux is located about 25 km north of Châteauroux, in the Indre department (36).
The parade starts at 2 p.m., Place de la République.
