Chahut! Musiques en Cévennes: A Unique Musical Festival in the Heart of the Cévennes
In the small village of Saint-Germain-de-Calberte, nestled in the hollow of the Cévennes valleys, a unique musical festival resonates every two years. Chahut! Musiques en Cévennes is a human-scale event that bets on artistic excellence and proximity to the public, in the heart of a rural territory inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
A Place Steeped in History
The festival concerts take place in the temple of Saint-Germain-de-Calberte, a building whose construction was decided in 1654 and inaugurated in 1656. This emblematic place of Protestant history in the Cévennes offers remarkable acoustics and a unique atmosphere, creating a dialogue between heritage and contemporary creation. The intimacy of the temple, its stone, and its natural light give the concerts a special dimension, far from standardized large stages.
An Audacious and Open Program
Under the artistic direction of Juliette de Massy, the festival offers a program that blurs the lines between musical genres. Classical music, contemporary music, electroacoustic music, free improvisation, sound poetry, vocal performances, and original creations coexist and blend throughout the concerts. The invited artists come from very diverse backgrounds, sharing a common taste for experimentation and encounters.
The themes explored by the artists touch upon profoundly human subjects: exile, hospitality, memory, the future, the relationship with nature and the territory. The festival aims to be a space for reflection as much as for musical pleasure, a place where music echoes the questions of the contemporary world.
Much More Than a Summer Festival
The Chahut! Musiques en Cévennes association is not limited to organizing the summer festival. Throughout the school year, it offers artist residencies in Saint-Germain-de-Calberte, allowing musicians to create in an inspiring environment, immersed in the Cévennes landscape. Off-season concerts and music workshops are also organized, contributing to maintaining a vibrant cultural life in this rural territory.
The festival has also established a literary partnership with Alès BD and local bookstores, adding a literary dimension to its program and cross-referencing perspectives between music and writing.
A Festival Rooted in its Territory
Chahut! Musiques en Cévennes is fully integrated into the cultural landscape of the Lozère Cévennes. The festival contributes to the valorization of local heritage and the attractiveness of the territory, drawing a music-loving audience that discovers or rediscovers this preserved corner of the Cévennes. The event benefits from the support of the Department of Lozère, the Cévennes National Park, and local authorities.
