Immersive historical show in the heart of Château-Gaillard with Richard the Lionheart
Richard's Visit is an immersive historical show that takes place every summer in the majestic setting of Château-Gaillard, the medieval fortress built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196 in Les Andelys. A talented actor embodies the Anglo-Norman king for a 1.5-hour theatrical tour in the heart of the ancient ruins, offering spectators a striking immersion into the medieval history of Normandy.
The concept of the show is based on an original idea: Richard the Lionheart, mysteriously transported to the 21st century, finds himself trapped in our time. To find his way back, he needs the visitors' help. Thus begins a fascinating narrative where the king recounts with flair and humor the major stages of his life: his childhood in Aquitaine, his crusades in the Holy Land, his captivity in Austria, his battles against Philip Augustus, and the grandiose construction of Château-Gaillard, this fortress he nicknamed "my beautiful one-year-old daughter." The show skillfully blends historical reenactment, live theater, and audience interaction.
Performances take place in the evening, usually at 8 PM, when the declining light bathes the ruins of Château-Gaillard in a magical atmosphere. The exceptional panorama of the Seine Valley, the chalk cliffs, and the town of Les Andelys below form an incomparable natural backdrop. The show is recommended for ages 10 and up and appeals to both history enthusiasts and families looking for an original cultural outing. Several dates are offered each summer, usually on Saturdays in August.

Performances scheduled for August 2nd, 9th, and 23rd, 2026 at 8 PM.
