One of the oldest chamber music festivals in France, in the heart of an 11th-century Romanesque priory
Since 1964, the Chirens International Chamber Music Festival has echoed with the finest pages of the chamber repertoire in the exceptional setting of the Prieuré Notre-Dame-du-Gayet, an 11th-century Romanesque church nestled at the foot of the Chartreuse massif in Isère. Founded by the painter Roger Lorin, this festival is one of the oldest chamber music festivals in France, and its exceptional longevity testifies to the deep attachment of the public and artists to this unique place.
The Prieuré Notre-Dame-du-Gayet in Chirens is a former Benedictine priory founded in the 11th century, likely by the lords of Clermont, and attached to the order of the Benedictines of Saint-Pierre de Vienne. Its Romanesque architecture is distinguished by its massive walls with small openings and its Romanesque apse, one of the few still preserved in the Pays Voironnais.
The building houses a remarkable artistic treasure: a cycle of frescoes painted by François Chambon between 1686 and 1687, as well as Romanesque inscriptions. The entire site was listed as a Historic Monument by decree on March 26, 1973, protecting the entire church, its 17th-century wall paintings, and its inscriptions.
In 1962, Roger Lorin, a painter and art drawing teacher at the Lycée technique d'État in Voiron, acquired the priory, which was then in ruins. He began its restoration with the help of his students, restoring it to its Romanesque church appearance. In the summer of 1964, at just 33 years old, he decided to dedicate this place to the arts and organized the first chamber music concerts there, laying the foundation for a festival that has endured for over sixty years.
The intimate configuration of the priory and the natural acoustic quality of its Romanesque nave make it an ideal venue for chamber music. The stone walls, vaults, and apse create a warm and precise resonance that enhances the timbres of string instruments, winds, and piano. This remarkable acoustics has won over the world's greatest musicians, who regularly return to perform in this unique setting.
Every summer, from July to September, the festival hosts about ten concerts featuring some of the world's best ensembles and soloists. Legendary string quartets, trios, duos, and quintets perform masterpieces of the chamber repertoire, from Haydn to Shostakovich, including Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, and Ravel.
Among the renowned artists and ensembles that have graced the priory's stage are the Trio Wanderer, the Talich Quartet, the Zemlinsky Quartet, Emmanuelle Bertrand, Pascal Amoyel, François Salque, Claire-Marie Le Guay, the Berlin Philharmonic Quintet, and many others.
Beyond musical excellence, the festival cultivates a unique spirit of conviviality. Each concert, scheduled for 8:30 PM, is followed by a cocktail with the artists, allowing the audience to interact directly with the musicians in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. This proximity between artists and audience is what makes the Chirens Festival unique and charming.
The 62nd edition of the Chirens International Chamber Music Festival will be held from July 18 to August 7, 2026, at the Prieuré Notre-Dame-du-Gayet. Four exceptional concerts will bring together major ensembles and soloists from the French and international scene in the remarkable acoustics of this 11th-century Romanesque church, classified as a Historic Monument, at the foot of the Chartreuse massif.
