Symphonies Lumières: When Classical Music Illuminates the Peaks of Courchevel
Courchevel Symphonies Lumières is one of those rare events that transcend the boundaries between arts to create a total sensory experience. Each summer, the village of Courchevel Le Praz (1,300 m), the first of Courchevel's villages when ascending the Saint-Bon-Tarentaise valley, transforms into an open-air theater for a show blending live symphonic music and a monumental light display.
The event takes place in an exceptional natural setting: Le Praz, an authentic mountain village preserved from the gigantism of high-altitude resorts, is dominated by spruce forests and the peaks of the Vanoise. It is also the site of the Albertville 1992 Olympic ski jump, an iconic structure that contributes to the visual identity of the show.
A Symphony Orchestra Under the Stars
The heart of the event is a grand open-air symphonic concert, performed by an orchestra of several dozen musicians. The repertoire blends major works from the classical and romantic repertoire — Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Bizet, Strauss — with film scores and popular pieces capable of appealing to a wide audience, from seasoned music lovers to families enjoying an evening under the stars.
The acoustic quality, amplified by the natural amphitheater-like topography of the site, and the presence of the mountains in the background create an incomparable sound and visual experience, very different from that of a traditional concert hall.
A Magical Light Show
Accompanying the concert, a light show adorns the mountains, trees, and sky with colors and projections synchronized with the music. Laser shows, architectural lighting, video projections on the mountainsides, and pyrotechnic effects create an ever-evolving luminous tableau, transforming the alpine landscape into an ephemeral work of art.
Courchevel Le Praz: An Authentic Village in the Heart of Tarentaise
Courchevel Le Praz, at an altitude of 1,300 meters, is the most authentic of Courchevel's villages. Unlike the higher altitudes (1,550, 1,650, 1,850), Le Praz has retained its mountain village character with its traditional chalets, church, local shops, and family atmosphere. It is also a recognized sports hub, regularly hosting international ski jumping and Nordic combined events on its Olympic ski jump.
In summer, Le Praz is a prime starting point for hikes in the Vanoise National Park and for outdoor activities, making Symphonies Lumières an ideal cultural complement to a day in the mountains.
