Heir to the livestock fair
The Douadic Tomato Fair was born in 1999, taking over from a century-old livestock fair that had made this small village in Brenne famous. The organizing association has successfully transformed this tradition into a modern event focused on gardening and local produce, while preserving the festive and popular spirit of the fair of yesteryear.
The tomato, queen of the fair
Every first Tuesday of May — a strategic date for planting after the Ice Saints — Douadic welcomes thousands of visitors looking for the best tomato plants. The varieties offered are countless: Cherry, Marmande, Beefsteak, Black Krim, Green Zebra, Horn of the Andes, Roma, and many others. Local nursery owners and market gardeners exhibit their finest specimens, while amateur gardeners exchange advice and tips for successful summer crops.
Much more than a tomato fair
While the tomato is the undisputed star of the day, the Douadic fair offers a much broader program. You'll find all kinds of vegetable plants, flowers, shrubs, gardening equipment, and tools. Numerous exhibitors also present clothing, homeware, agricultural equipment, and vehicles.
Local Brenne products are featured: goat cheeses, Brenne honey, cured meats, wines, and artisanal jams. A raffle is held throughout the day, and a meal is offered at the Relais de la Brenne to extend the conviviality.
An event rooted in the Brenne territory
Located in the heart of the Brenne Regional Natural Park, the commune of Douadic offers an exceptional natural setting for this spring fair. The area is known for its ponds, remarkable biodiversity, and preserved landscapes. The Tomato Fair contributes to the animation and attractiveness of this rural territory, drawing visitors and producers from all over Berry and neighboring departments.
A festive day for the whole family
From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the village of Douadic transforms into a vast open-air market. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, with aisles lined with colorful stalls and passionate discussions between gardeners. It's a special time for families, gardening enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to discover the riches of the Brenne region in an authentically rural atmosphere.
