Illuminated boats on the Creuse, fireworks and concerts in Lurais
The Fête des Barques of Lurais is a magical summer event organized every year in August by the Lurais'tivales association on the banks of the Creuse. Since 1988, about ten illuminated boats, built in secret by teams of volunteers, parade on the river in a fairy-tale spectacle of lights, ingenious mechanisms, and original soundtracks. The evening begins with an open-air concert and ends with a grand fireworks display launched from the island and the bridge. Free, this event attracts between 2,000 and 3,000 spectators in this small village in the Creuse valley.
The Fête des Barques in Lurais is one of the most original and poetic events in the Creuse valley. Every year in August, about ten illuminated boats slowly parade on the dark waters of the river, offering spectators gathered on the banks a spectacle of striking beauty. Each boat is a unique artistic creation, carrying themes created in secret by teams of passionate "barquistes" (boat makers), with light effects, animated mechanisms, and a soundtrack chosen by each team.
Since its first edition in 1988, the Fête des Barques has continued to grow, now reaching its 37th edition. Residents of Lurais and neighboring towns dedicate several months to preparing their boats, competing in creativity and ingenuity to surprise the public. The themes are varied: fantastic creatures, fairy tale characters, historical scenes, tributes to nature. Each parade is accompanied by an original soundtrack that enhances the emotional impact of the show.
The evening begins with an open-air concert on the banks of the Creuse, immersing spectators in the festive atmosphere of the evening. The invited bands vary depending on the edition, offering eclectic musical styles: world music, rock, folk, jazz. Food and drink stalls offering local products allow attendees to eat while enjoying the mild summer evenings by the water.
The highlight of the evening is the grand fireworks display, launched from the island and the bridge of Lurais. The reflections of the rockets in the waters of the Creuse create a doubly impressive spectacle that concludes the evening in apotheosis. This magical moment, in the preserved setting of the Creuse valley, leaves an unforgettable memory for spectators.
The Fête des Barques is organized by the association Lurais'tivales, which also hosts concerts and exhibitions throughout the year. The event is entirely free, reflecting the volunteer and participatory spirit that animates this small village in the Brenne region. The festival is supported by the Parc Naturel Régional de la Brenne and the tourist network Destination Brenne, contributing to the influence of this preserved territory.
