The great traditional fair of L'Île-Bouchard in the heart of Touraine
The Foire de la Saint-Martin in L'Île-Bouchard perpetuates a centuries-old tradition of autumn fairs that marked the agricultural calendar in Touraine. Organized every November 11th, the day of Saint Martin – the patron saint of winegrowers and innkeepers – this large popular fair takes over the streets and quays of L'Île-Bouchard, a small town of character nestled on the banks of the Vienne between Chinon and Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine.
The heart of the Foire de la Saint-Martin is its large flea market, one of the most important of the season in Touraine. Nearly 400 exhibitors set up their stalls along rue de la Liberté, rue de la République, quai Courbet, and throughout the island area of the town. Antique furniture, tableware, trinkets, books, vinyl records, tools, vintage clothing, and collector's items attract seasoned bargain hunters and curious strollers alike. The atmosphere is one of discovery and good deals, in the tradition of the great country garage sales.
Beyond the flea market, the Foire de la Saint-Martin offers a funfair area with rides and attractions for children and families, as well as car exhibitions that appeal to automotive enthusiasts. Touraine gastronomy is in the spotlight with food stalls offering rillons, rillettes, fouaces, Sainte-Maure goat cheese, and Chinon and Bourgueil wines. Refreshment stands are located along the route to warm up on this autumn day.
L'Île-Bouchard owes its name to the island formed by the two branches of the Vienne river that flows through the town. This picturesque town is famous for its Saint-Léonard priory with its 12th-century carved capitals and for the Marian apparitions of 1947 which still attract many pilgrims. The Foire de la Saint-Martin is an opportunity to discover this heritage in the warm atmosphere of a popular festival that brings together all generations.
