The European Heritage Days are an unmissable event in the cultural life of Montpellier and the Hérault department, in Occitanie. Every third weekend of September, the City of Montpellier and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, through their Culture and Heritage Department, coordinate the exceptional opening of over 150 sites — monuments, museums, public buildings, private mansions, gardens, and archives usually closed to the public.
Access is free in the vast majority of locations. Some guided tours, with limited capacity, require prior registration. Sites generally welcome the public from 10 am to 6 pm.
At the heart of Montpellier, the event highlights the richness of the city's heritage: Saint-Pierre Cathedral and its 14th-century cylindrical towers, the Fabre Museum and its collections, the Atger Museum nestled within the Faculty of Medicine, the Hérault prefecture housed in the former 18th-century Hôtel des Intendants, or the Hôtel de Varennes. The event fully contributes to the cultural and tourist appeal of the Hérault department and the Occitanie region.
Enlightened enthusiasts and simple curious visitors alike will find something to satisfy their curiosity over these two days: guided tours, exhibitions, openings of confidential places, and activities. The full program is published annually on the official portal jep.montpellier.fr and on the Ministry of Culture's website.
