The international festival of fanfares and bandas of Mazamet
Fanfares Sans Frontières is a free international festival of fanfares, bandas, and majorettes organized every July in Mazamet since 1996. Founded by Bernard Pailhé around an association created in 1987, it has become one of the most important gatherings of brass bands in Europe. For three days, groups from around the world — Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic — take over the streets of Mazamet for parades, night parades, and open-air concerts in a festive and popular atmosphere.
Since 1996, the Fanfares Sans Frontières festival has made the city of Mazamet vibrate to the sound of brass, percussion, and rhythms from around the world. Born from the passion of Bernard Pailhé, a Mazamet shopkeeper who never knew how to read sheet music but had an unconditional love for fanfares, the festival is the extension of an association founded in 1987 around a group of Czechoslovak musicians passing through the region.
In three decades, Fanfares Sans Frontières has risen to become one of the most important fanfare festivals in Europe. Each edition hosts brass groups from around the world: Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, France, and many other countries. Traditional fanfares, bandas, majorettes, contemporary brass ensembles, and street formations mingle in a program that celebrates the diversity of outdoor musical traditions.
The festival unfolds over three days in July with a program that builds in intensity: on Wednesday, the fanfares go to meet the public in the streets and squares of the city center; Thursday offers a great musical and choreographic moment in the heart of the city; Friday, the highlight of the festival, features the spectacular grand night parade, a luminous and sound-filled procession that brings all the groups together in a memorable final celebration.
True to its popular spirit since its creation, Fanfares Sans Frontières is a completely free festival. This freeness, combined with the festive and accessible nature of fanfares, makes it a quintessential family event that attracts thousands of spectators to the streets of Mazamet every year. The festival is now directed by Christophe Cornier, who took over from founder Bernard Pailhé.
Nestled at the foot of the Montagne Noire, the former capital of the deerskin industry offers an exceptional setting for this street festival. The shaded squares, the alleys of the historic center, and the natural amphitheater formed by the surrounding hills create unique acoustics and atmosphere. Fanfares Sans Frontières contributes to the cultural and tourist influence of Mazamet and the entire Pays d'Autan, extending the musical and festive tradition of this working-class city transformed into a dynamic cultural hub.
