Artetango, Argentine Tango Comes to Albi
Since 2008, the association Arte Tango Albi (ATA), founded and artistically directed by Claire Prouhet, has transformed the city of Albi into the French capital of Argentine tango every summer. The International Argentine Tango Festival Artetango has become, over the years, an essential reference for tango lovers and professionals in France and Europe, attracting artists from Buenos Aires, Brussels, Paris, and Spain.
The Pratgraussals Hall, an Exceptional Setting
Nestled on the banks of the Tarn, a short walk from the historic center of Albi and its majestic UNESCO World Heritage Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, the festival is mainly held at the Pratgraussals performance hall (chemin de Pratgraussals, 81000 Albi). Fully air-conditioned, with a flexible wooden floor and excellent acoustics, this hall can accommodate up to 300 participants and offers an ideal setting for dancing. Access from the city center takes eight minutes on foot via a footbridge overlooking the Tarn, or by free electric shuttles provided during the festival.
A Rich and Varied Program Over Four Days
Artetango offers much more than just a dance festival: it's a complete immersion into Argentine tango culture. The program unfolds over four intense days (August 20-23) with an opening evening off-site on August 19 at the Café Plum in Lautrec, featuring the Trio Timba Tango (Pedro Ratto, guitar and vocals; Julien Blondel, piano; Charles Humbert, double bass).
The days are structured around several highlights:
- Afternoon Balls (Bal de la tarde): every afternoon, the Pratgraussals hall opens for a friendly milonga hosted by international DJs in a relaxed atmosphere, with an organic bar and homemade pastries. Entry from 6 euros, included in the full pass.
- Workshops with the Maestros: classes are offered at four levels by internationally renowned master choreographers. The 2025 edition featured Agustín Venturino and Natalia Agüero (Brussels), a couple known for their improvised, elegant, and musical tango, as well as Andrés Molina and Natacha Lockwood (Paris), for a lively and harmonious tango. Specialized technique workshops (follower technique, introductions to Argentine folklore with Ay Aurora) complete the educational offerings.
- Evening Concerts-Milongas: the highlight of each day. The Quinteto Galván, a flagship ensemble of the festival, brings together three bandoneonists, a guitar, and a violin for a typically Argentine sound. The evenings continue until 3:30 AM, alternating live concerts and DJ milongas.
- Conferences: a rare cultural dimension in a dance festival. The festival offers conferences on the history of danced tango and its evolution (with Maestros Agustín and Natalia), as well as a presentation on the artisanal making of the bandoneon by Pedro Galván himself (10 euros, included in the full pass).
- The Semi-Marathon Despedida: the grand finale on Sunday evening, a ten-hour non-stop dance marathon with two DJs (Aurora Fornuto and Andrés Molina) and a live musical interlude by Simone Tolomeo and Brian Chambouleyron on bandoneon, guitar, and vocals.
A Festival Open to the City
Artetango cultivates a strong connection with the Albi region. Guided tours in costume through the heart of medieval Albi, buffet meals prepared with local products, diverse catering (organic bar, empanadas, pizzas, Cosmopol'eat food truck), and partnerships with downtown hotels make the festival an event rooted in local life. The festival benefits from the support of the City of Albi, the Department of Tarn, ADDA, and the Tarn Departmental Tourism Committee.
A Vibrant Community All Year Round
Beyond the summer event, the Arte Tango Albi association animates the tango scene in the Albi region throughout the year with regular workshops, monthly milongas, and beginner classes. The association also organizes occasional workshops with international Maestros (Pablo & Emilie Tegli, Sigrid Van Tilbeurgh, Maria Filali, Emmanuel Casal, Yanina Muzyka...) in Albi and the surrounding region. Founded on values of sharing and openness, Arte Tango Albi has become a hub for Argentine tango in the entire southern quarter of France.
