Chamber music in the Romanesque churches of Bourbonnais since 1966
The Bourbonnais Music Festival is a chamber music festival founded in 1966 in Hérisson, Allier. Created to musically animate the region and restore the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre de Châteloy and its 13th and 16th-century murals, it offers five to six concerts each summer from July to August. The intimacy of the small churches in the Bourbonnais bocage — Châteloy, Maillet, Nassigny, Louroux-Hodement — offers an ideal setting for chamber music. With over 200 concerts and 50,000 listeners since its creation, the festival is under the patronage of the Departmental Council of Allier.
The Bourbonnais Music Festival was born in 1966 from a dual desire: to bring musical animation to the Bourbonnais countryside and to save the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre de Châteloy from destruction, which was then cracked, damp, and dilapidated. It was the passion of a woman, Madame Irmagard Cacheux, a neighboring owner, that allowed this exceptional place to be saved. Music became the vector for the building's renaissance, and the festival has continued to grow ever since, accumulating over 200 concerts and welcoming more than 50,000 listeners over the decades.
What distinguishes the Bourbonnais Music Festival is its traveling nature. Each summer, five to six concerts unfold in the small Romanesque churches of the Bourbonnais bocage: the Saint-Pierre church in Châteloy in Hérisson, the historic venue of the festival, but also the churches of Maillet, Nassigny, and Louroux-Hodement. The intimacy of these buildings, whose reduced capacity creates a rare proximity between musicians and the public, is ideally suited for chamber music.
The Saint-Pierre de Châteloy church, the historic heart of the festival, is a jewel of 12th-century Romanesque art. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Aumance river, 1.5 km northwest of the village of Hérisson, it preserves remarkable 13th and 16th-century murals. Its large buttresses and sober architecture make it a concert venue with exceptional natural acoustics, where every note resonates with striking clarity.
Under the patronage of the Departmental Council of Allier, the festival has offered for over fifty years a clever mix of festive, baroque, "learned," and surprising music. The program hosts various ensembles: string quartets, piano-cello duos, baroque ensembles, piano recitals, octets, and original formations. The works performed cover a wide spectrum, from Haydn to Shostakovich, including Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, and Liszt, not to mention traditional Yiddish and Klezmer repertoires.
Each concert is followed by the traditional "glass of friendship", a moment of conviviality that allows the public to interact with the musicians in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. This tradition, rooted since the origins of the festival, reflects the spirit of sharing and proximity that characterizes this unique event in Bourbonnais. The festival benefits from the support of the Vallée Cœur de France Tourist Office and the surrounding municipalities.
