Festival de Pâques de Chartres

The major multidisciplinary festival of Easter weekend in Chartres

Chartres — Eure-et-Loir (28) Since 2003

About Festival de Pâques

Created in 2003 by Jean-Baptiste Fourtané, the Festival de Pâques de Chartres was the most important Christian music festival in France in the 2000s. During Easter weekend, hundreds of artists took over the city center under marquees and in the cathedral for concerts of all styles: classical, pop, rock, jazz, electro, chanson. Theater, dance, and shows for young audiences completed the program. After eight memorable editions, the event ceased in 2011.

The Festival de Pâques de Chartres: A Cultural and Spiritual Adventure

For eight consecutive years, from 2003 to 2010, the Festival de Pâques vibrated the city of Chartres to the rhythm of an eclectic and ambitious program. Created by Jean-Baptiste Fourtané, then marketing director of Famille chrétienne and a resident of Chartres, this unique festival combined artistic excellence, musical diversity, and a spiritual dimension, driven by the conviction that music and the performing arts could unite beyond divisions.

A Festival Recognized as a National Reference

The Festival de Pâques de Chartres quickly established itself as the most important Christian music festival in France in the 2000s. Its program, composed of renowned national and international artists, covered the entire musical spectrum: classical and sacred music in the majestic Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral, as well as pop, rock, variety, French chanson, jazz, electronic music, and rap under the marquees set up in the city center.

Beyond music, the festival offered plays, dance performances, artistic performances, and shows for young audiences, making this Easter weekend a true multidisciplinary event open to all audiences.

Impressive Growth

From one edition to the next, the festival continued to grow. During its fourth edition in 2006, it already brought together 35 concerts and 400 artists. The following year, in 2007, the fifth edition offered 60 concerts and shows, confirming the event's place in the cultural landscape of Chartres and France.

The support of the Diocese of Chartres, particularly from Bishop Bernard-Nicolas Aubertin and then Bishop Michel Pansard, was decisive. The Chemin Neuf Community contributed to the launch of the festival by lending its premises and assisting with the liturgy at the cathedral during the festivities.

Iconic Venues Serving Art

The festival took over the historic heart of Chartres. Sacred and classical music concerts resonated under the vaults of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Other shows were held under marquees specially erected for the occasion, in the city's cultural venues and churches, creating a unique festive atmosphere in the streets of the city center.

The End of a Beautiful Adventure

Despite its public and artistic success, the Festival de Pâques faced growing financial difficulties. One month before its ninth edition, scheduled for April 23, 24, and 25, 2011, the organizing association was forced to cancel and definitively end the festival series. The Festival de Pâques de Chartres remains in collective memory as a pioneering event that successfully combined music, spirituality, and conviviality.
