Fifty years of sacred music in a Gothic jewel
Since its creation in 1975, the International Organ Festival of Chartres has established itself as one of the major events for classical and sacred music in France. Organized by the Association des Grandes Orgues de Chartres (AGOC), this festival offers Sunday concerts every summer at 4:30 PM in the Chartres Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic art and a UNESCO World Heritage site. In parallel, the Summer Evenings, initiated in 1991 by the City of Chartres, offer evening concerts on Thursdays in July and August, allowing residents and tourists to enjoy the musical magic of the cathedral in the special atmosphere of summer nights.
The Great Organ of Chartres: an exceptional instrument
The Great Organ of Chartres Cathedral is among the most prestigious instruments in France. The historic organ, with origins dating back to the 14th century, has been rebuilt and enhanced over the centuries. Since September 2022, an ambitious project to rebuild the grand organ has been underway, with the creation of a new four-manual instrument with about fifty stops, adapted to the historic case and the exceptional acoustics of the cathedral. While awaiting completion, scheduled for the end of 2026, concerts continue with the choir organ and various instrumental and vocal ensembles: voices, strings, brass, and chamber groups.
A world-renowned international competition
The International Organ Competition of Chartres, organized by AGOC, has welcomed young organists from around the world for fifty years. This prestigious competition has revealed many talents who have gone on to have international careers. It testifies to Chartres' influence in the world of sacred music and organ music, making the cathedral a major center of European musical culture.
Summer Evenings: the cathedral under the stars
The Summer Evenings, created in 1991, offer concerts on Thursday evenings at 9 PM during July and August. In the unique atmosphere of the cathedral, bathed by the twilight filtering through the famous 12th and 13th-century stained glass windows, spectators experience an incomparable sensory experience. These musical evenings are part of the broader program of ChartrEstivales, the summer events of the City of Chartres, and are accessible free of charge or at a reduced rate, as part of a commitment to democratizing classical music.
A living musical heritage in the heart of Chartres
The Summer Concerts of the Cathedral contribute to the cultural influence of Chartres far beyond the borders of Eure-et-Loir. They attract thousands of music lovers, tourists, and pilgrims each year, who come to combine the discovery of architectural heritage with the beauty of classical music. The Maîtrise de la Cathédrale, the International Festival, and the Summer Evenings make Chartres a leading musical hub in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
