Chefs Op' en Lumière: Cinema's Light Honored in Chalon-sur-Saône

Created in 2019, the Festival des Chefs Op' en Lumière is the only festival in France entirely dedicated to Directors of Photography, those artists who translate cinematic narrative and directors' intentions into images. Every year in February-March, Chalon-sur-Saône – the birthplace of Nicéphore Niépce, inventor of photography – hosts this unique event that celebrates the art of light in cinema.

An Exceptional Film Program

The festival features about fifty feature films, including many previews, eight European films in competition, restored films, a short film competition, and a film concert. Screenings take place at the Megarama cinema and the Espace des Arts, Chalon-sur-Saône's national stage, offering spectators optimal projection conditions to appreciate the work of the cinematographers.

Master-classes and Professional Meetings

Beyond screenings, the festival offers exceptional master-classes where Directors of Photography share the secrets of their art. Conferences, workshops, exhibitions, and meetings with about thirty film professionals complete the program, making each edition a true journey behind the scenes of cinematic creation.

A Festival on the Rise

Since its creation, the Festival des Chefs Op' en Lumière has continued to grow. With over 16,000 admissions, the festival has established itself as a major event on the French film calendar. The 2026 edition spans nine days, reflecting the growing public enthusiasm for this original event.

Chalon-sur-Saône, City of Light

The festival's anchoring in Chalon-sur-Saône is no coincidence. The city, the cradle of photography thanks to Nicéphore Niépce, maintains a deep connection with the art of capturing light. The Musée Nicéphore Niépce, one of the most important photography museums in the world, reinforces this photographic identity, making Chalon the natural home for a festival dedicated to the masters of cinematic light.
