Classical music sublimates the Vendée abbatial heritage
The Festival des Voûtes Célestes invites music lovers to experience rare and intense musical moments in the heart of the abbeys of southern Vendée. Supported by the Department of Vendée, this unmissable classical music event unfolds each year with an original program combining prestige, boldness, and discovery under the centuries-old vaults of the abbeys of Nieul-sur-l'Autise and Maillezais, as well as the Prieuré de Grammont. A unique dialogue between medieval heritage and musical excellence.
For over twenty years, the Festival des Voûtes Célestes has established itself as the unmissable classical music event in Vendée. Organized by the Department of Vendée, this festival takes over the most beautiful abbey sites in the south of the department to offer spectators a unique artistic and sensory experience, where music resonates under vaults steeped in history.
The concerts take place in three major heritage sites: the Abbaye de Nieul-sur-l'Autise, a jewel of Romanesque art in Vendée, whose cloister is one of the best-preserved in Western France; the Abbaye de Maillezais, an impressive Gothic ruin standing in the heart of the Marais poitevin; and the Chapelle du Prieuré de Grammont, a gem of medieval architecture. These sites offer remarkable natural acoustics that enhance the artists' performances.
The festival is distinguished by its bold musical choices, combining prestige, boldness, and discovery. Baroque music, classical repertoire, contemporary creations, and improvisations follow one another throughout the evenings. Among the recurring highlights, the Orchestre des Abbayes brings together renowned musicians for exceptional concerts. The festival has hosted internationally renowned artists such as violinist Svetlin Roussev, the British choir Tenebrae, Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, and the vocal group Opus Jam.
Les Voûtes Célestes is designed for all audiences. Ticket prices remain affordable, with reduced rates for young people aged 7 to 26 and free admission for children under 7. Multi-concert pass packages allow you to fully enjoy the program. Each concert is an invitation to discover the Vendée heritage in a different way, in an intimate and warm atmosphere.
By investing in the abbeys of southern Vendée, the festival actively contributes to the valorization and influence of the cultural heritage of Vendée. It participates in the tourist appeal of the Marais poitevin region and raises awareness among new audiences each year about the richness of the department's medieval architectural heritage.
